Musical theatre lines that Do Things to my emotions

You know when you hear a line from a musical and it hits you that it's one of the best and deepest musical theatre lyrics you've ever come across?

It might be because of the simple power of the lyrics, or the raw emotion of the music itself, or a combination of both.  (In my experience, such lines are usually rather sad *ahem*, so, y'know, prepare yourself.) Anywho, I've decided to compile a list of some of the aforementioned song lines that have really Touched Me.  (I like lists, in case you haven't noticed.  But mainly just in blogging and/or fandom things.  I don't do many other kinds of lists.  Moving on.)  This is by no means a comprehensive list, of course.

"I'se tired o' livin' and scared o' dyin', but Old Man River, he jest keeps rollin' along." ~ from Show Boat

"Oh, my Creator, what is the good of the strongest heart in a body that's falling apart?  A serious flaw -- I hope You know that." ~ from Evita

"I loved you, Julie.  Know that I loved you." ~ from Carousel

"Let future historians wonder how Eliza reacted when you broke her heart . . . you have torn it all apart; I'm watching it burn." ~ from Hamilton

"Don't cry for me, Argentina:  the truth is, I shall not leave you.  Though it may get harder for you to see me, I'm Argentina and always will be." ~ from Evita

"Christine, I love you." ~ from The Phantom of the Opera

"Here they talked of revolution; here it was they lit the flame. Here they sang about tomorrow, and tomorrow never came." ~ from Les Misérables

"Yet in his eyes, all the sadness of the world -- those pleading eyes, that both threaten and adore." ~ from The Phantom of the Opera

"To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause . . . " ~ from Man of La Mancha

"Let others rise to take our place until the earth is free!" ~ from Les Misérables

And -- let's just be real -- the entirety of the last few minutes of Les Mis and "Down Once More/Track Down This Murderer" from Phantom.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sheesh, this was depressing.  Sorry 'bout that.  In other news, I have again changed my look.  Behold.  I don't think the last one was quite doing it for most of us -- myself included -- and I realized that I will probably want to use that background for a different look later in the year, so here we are :)

  1. I love the coloring and new header! It's very perfect for spring!

This was a fascinating post for me to read, as I don't pay attention to lyrics, only to the music and the emotion the music evokes. I always love reading stuff about people to whom the words matter, because it's not something I can relate to. So this was really cool. I know all these musicals, too, except Les Mis. Very neat to read these lines that stood out for you.

    1. Thank you so much!! Yep, I'm pretty happy with it, too ;D

Interesting! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I -- obviously -- do tend to think about the lyrics a good bit, but there are also so many plain musical motifs that "get" me, too. For instance, the opening bars of "I Dreamed a Dream," before she actually starts to sing. Wow, good for you! Do you like any of these musicals more than another? You should try Les Mis, too ;) It's not my favorite, but it is very good.

    2. My sister played in a lot of versions of Evita (she's a flute player), so I tend to be very fond of it because I heard it a lot. I also love Showboat. But I don't think Les Mis is for me. Hamlette had sent me links to some of the songs on youtube and it wasn't the kind of music I enjoy, so I think sitting through it would be pretty tortuous. It has plenty of fans, it doesn't need me! :-D

    3. Oh, that's neat!

Gotcha. Fair point there -- it does have plenty of fans. :)

  2. Lyrics are amazing yes BUT WOAHHHNESS YOUR HEADER IS A STUNNING PIECE OF ART.

  3. YOU INCLUDED "BURN" FROM HAMILTON YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS.

Er, sorry . . . I just tend to get Really Emotional where Hamilton is concerned ;-)

For me, one of the most emotional moments/lines is from the duel scene--"I should've known the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me." WHY.

And also, "Philip--you would like it uptown--it's quiet uptown . . ." *wipes eyes and makes a stern effort to compose herself*

"Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" just Does Things To Me. Every time. It's haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard.

    1. Yaaaasss!! Okay, I'll make a confession. I haven't actually heard most of Hamilton. I've listened to some of the songs, but "Burn" is the one I like the best. I also really like "Helpless," "You'll Be Back," and bits of others. :D

      IT REALLY IS HARD.

  4. Yay! I really love this! I have listened to all of these except the Man of La Mancha.
    Is it any good?

Would you mind if I did a post like this on my blog?

  6. OHHH, THIS WAS SO... SAAAAADDDD!!! *sobs*

I, too, adore musicals (particularly the sad ones... we are masochists, apparently) and the lyrics are just so heartbreaking!! "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables" really hits me hard. Recently, anyway. "Phantom faces at the window! Phantom shadows on the floor!" and "Oh, my friends, my friends, don't ask me! What your sacrifice was for!" and "There's a grief that can't be spoken/there's a pain goes on and on/ empty chairs at empty tables/now my friends are dead and gone" and "Oh, my friends, my friends, forgive me! That I live and you are gone!" almost like he's suffering from Survivor's Guilt and... *sobbbing*

Also "Burn." *sobs* And all of "Dear Theodosia" *sobbing intensifies* and "It's Quiet Uptown. *is dead now*

Anyway. I agree most heartily. Musicals are amazing things of beauty that have an uncanny ability to mess with my emotions. Curse them. (But also bless them because I love them!)

YES I KNOW RIGHT. (Hehe, indeed we are.) Yaaaaasss, tears. I definitely think he was suffering from Survivor's Guilt. :'(

Haha, couldn't have said it better myself, even though I generally watch older, happier ones. :-P

  7. I don't actually watch a lot of musicals, but for those I have seen I can totally relate to what you said about those lines that sort of hit you between the eyes, and are just SO moving and powerful and goooood!! I love it when I come across a line like that.

"Oh, my Creator, what is the good of the strongest heart in a body that's falling apart?" Ohmygoodness. I've never seen that movie, but that line is like "pow!" even without the music!! :)

And now...I must say something about your new blog look because...

I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOOOOOVE IT!!! Your header is ridiculously beautiful. I'm in awe of your talent, my dear. (And that little Dumbo picture on the sidebar? Dat's just cute!! :))

  8. YOUR NEW HEADER IS COMPLETE GORGEOUSNESS, WOW. I have to admit I'm glad you changed it back to the old style. It just seems more familiar and "you". Plus, your headers are always so beautiful, so I missed seeing them. <3

Oooh, this is a beautiful list. I'm only familiar with the Phantom and Les Mis ones (SOB), but the others are both lovely and sad, too. :')

    1. PS. I was staring at your header again. I love the font you used, by the way, and the deliciously dusty, "vintage" look of all the photos...but I digress. I had a specific question: do you know what movie that regency photo in the bottom left is from? It looks BEAUTIFUL.

    2. AWWWWWWW. <3 You guys are so kind!! Yeah, I think I'm pretty happy I changed, too. I mean, I definitely am happy with this look, although I do like the other one. But some features of it just got a little "old," hehe. ;-P Dawwwww, thank you so much! Your blog looks are always gorgeous, too. And how do you get the sidebar pictures to all be completely uniform in size? Do you resize them?

      I know, THE PAIN. :')

P.S. Why, thank you!! But I'm afraid I do not know what that picture is. I found it on somebody's Pinterest (maybe Naomi's??), and she said she didn't know what it was from, either. Apparently t'is a mystery. :-P But I agree, it's such a pretty photo!!

    3. You're welcome. <3 *hugs*
Hmmm, I'm not sure. I don't resize them by hand or anything, but when I upload them in the blogger images gadget I always check that little box "resize" and that seems to make them fit. :)

Really? Hmm, now I'm even more curious about this mystery period drama! :D Anyhow, it's very pretty. <3

Yeah, basically just the whole of Les Mis and Phantom are enough to make me feel emotional. (Especially "Wishing" and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables"... *sobs*)

There are several musicals here that are on my list to see. Musicals are my jam. :D

  13. Song cues. Sometimes they are good, a song a like, sometimes not so good, a song I don't like but can't get out of my head. This post reminded me I NEED to see Evita and Phantom of the Opera.

Eeeeee, yes! Evita has an interesting *ahem* moral standpoint, but the music is so goooooood. <3 *sigh* And Phantom is great, of course. (I'm partial to the 25th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall version! :))
