15 Reasons to Watch 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

[I've only had this show for two months, but if anything happened to it I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.]

Brooklyn Nine Nine. Haha Hitchcock & Scully don't even get their own squares

1.  It's Parks & Rec in a police precinct.
Just a gaggle of ten or so police workers fightin' crime and being precious, radiant little nutcases.  Peak workplace comedy.  You get to know the interrogation room and the bull pen and the break room and Holt's office and the evidence room, and you love it all. ♡

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

2.  Raymond Holt.
Holt has joined Ben Wyatt and Sheldon Cooper at the top of my "favorite sitcom guys" list.  [Their snark, y'all.  Their snark.  They're all so sassy™ in such different ways and it gives me life.]

Holt is such a mixture of deeply devoted father figure/mature, seasoned police officer and wILDLY pETTY college frat boy.  It is a Delight to watch.

3.  It will make you happy.
We all need that always, but especially right now.  You'll roll your eyes at the nonsense pranks and toddler antics of these grown adults, but then you'll have your Heart Warmed by their easy loyalty to each other.  When one of them is having a hard time, they'll all swoop in with a simple, natural affection to distract or comfort or just generally help.  They're all at different places with their biological families, but they definitely find a family amongst each other.

4.  Amy Santiago.
We stan binder-loving, overachieving, competent, socially delusional, responsible cinnamon rolls. ♡

me trying to be intriguing and failing

*SPOILERS* 5.  There is little to no romantic drama.
Jake and Amy are really the only [lasting] workplace romance, and once they're together, they're together.  Sure, there's some angst in the beginning: with them, before they're a couple, and with Charles/Rosa when he likes her.  But it's minimal and quickly resolved.

Also, THIS ^^

6.  Jake Peralta.
A dork, to be sure, but a welcome one.

i'm in charge, and i say it's tooshie

7.  Jake and Amy's relationship.
Much wholesome.  Very cuteness.

8.  Gina Linetti.
Gina Linetti is the Donna Meagle/Kelly Kapoor of B99, but, where I only occasionally like/tolerate Donna and Kelly, I genuinely love Gina.  She's actually hilarious, and her reluctant, long-suffering, sardonic love for all her people is extremely satisfying.

9.  It actually contains important themes.
The show's a comedy through and through, but one of my favorite things about it is that it also makes space for addressing real issues in a way that is serious and thoughtful while never crossing into melodramatic or depressing territory.

Sexism? ✓

Racial discrimination? ✓

Rape culture? ✓

Police profiling? ✓

Family dysfunction? ✓

And so on.

10.  Terry Jeffords.
Terry Jeffords is an excitable, yogurt-loving, family-oriented, dad-friend fitness addict and I love him.  He's wholesome, that one is. ♡  [I mean, really, they all are.]

TERRY. CRUSHED. IT.

11.  The humor.
Occasionally some of the jokes are a little forced, but on the whole, the wit in this series is top-notch.  It usually makes me physically giggle at least once per episode.

[It's also been known to make me spit all over my computer when watching while eating, so that's nice. 😁]

12.  Rosa Diaz.
If Ron Swanson and April Ludgate were to design their ideal person, they would design Rosa. 😛

Rosa's Big & Tough & Deep-Down Soft™.  She has assorted instruments of torture with her at all times, but she also loves Gilmore Girls and Nancy Meyers.  She's awesome.

13.  There are so many little things.
Again, the humor.  Again, the little moments of these people coming through for each other.  Again, the happy, low-stress vibe of it.

But also, the Jimmy Jab Games.  Also, the Halloween Heists.  Also, the recurring characters.  Also, Amy and Charles's obscure skills.  Also, the way every character has a special relationship with every other character.  Also, the way the show subverts gender stereotypes/expectations.  Also, the way it addresses ideological conflicts and still gives grace for reconciliation between differing viewpoints.

14.  Charles Boyle.
Charles is a Strange Bean, but he's sweet and honorable and very loyal.  I liked that one of the latest episodes delved a little deeper than usual into his worth as a police officer.

15.  What better time than now?
Most of us have more time to kill, and most of us need some cheering up.  This will take care of both problems for you. 😜  So go forth, watch!

[Disclaimer time:  Content-wise, this show is comparable to The Office, Parks & Recreation, or The Big Bang Theory.  So keep that in mind when you're considering whether to try it.]

  2. Haha, yes! XD Brooklyn Nine-Nine!

(Also your opening line to this post. Yikes, girl! XD Somebody's been reading a lot of Shakespeare, haha.)

I have a funny relationship with this show - it's the ONLY TV show that I've seen random episodes of and have never watched chronologically. I've seen bits when we had sleepovers with friends on multiple occasions (with multiple different friends) and probably haven't seen much more than a dozen episodes altogether. But I have always enjoyed it. To be honest, I DO have to be in the mood to watch it, but most times I would definitely sit in on an episode. I'd like to eventually go through and actually watch them all properly like a civilized person. ;D Though I don't have the show myself...

By the way, how many seasons are there?

I really appreciate how light-hearted and fun it is. And yes, the themes are good, too. And the characters are quite strong and memorable, so I really love that. And the humour is pretty funny. ;) Gina cracks me up every time, haha.

And now you've made me want to watch this show again! (Also is it random of me to always get reminded of Meghan Markle every time I see Melissa Fumero? I think because I was introduced to B99 and Suits at the same time, and I felt as though both their characters had things in common.)

    1. (Haha, it's actually an "inside joke" for the post; it's a play on something Rosa says. :-P)

I get that! Yeah, it's funny: I'm not usually a TV show person, but during this *ahem* time, I've been getting into several newer television programs. *shrugs*

There are seven seasons so far! But they have been renewed for an eighth. (I am happy about that. xD)

Yes to all! I love the strength of both the themes and the characters, like you said.

Yay! (Oooh, actually, I can totally see that.)

  4. I think your fan video or favorite couple video featured Jake and Amy, and I got slightly curious. I might have to try. I'm really, really picky about tv though.

    1. It did, indeed!

I get that. I don't watch that much TV myself. If it helps, I tend to go more for lighthearted, sillier sitcoms with moments of genuine goodness/sweetness -- at least at the moment. So that's more the vibe of this one.

    2. Lighthearted and sillier sounds just about right for right now! I'm going to have to find where I can stream it.

    3. Go for it! I watch it on Hulu, btw.

  5. *happy siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighs*

This show is important to me and this post is important me and I love, I just LOVE, how you summed everything up. <333

Gah, I really need to go back and watch it some more, don't I?

I truly believe Brooklyn 99 is one of the best 'found-family' shows, maybe one of the best found-family STORIES, ever written. It just ... it just delves really deep into the heart of what it means to choose your family, and love those people you've chosen 'til the end, without ever being sappy or overly sentimental about it. But still being DEEP. I have so many feels about these precious children. *sniffles slightly*

YOU INCLUDED THE FAMILY GAME NIGHT THING

"Every time someone steps up and says who they really are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place ... Thank you."

    *full-on sobbing*

Also Rosa Diaz is one of my favorite strong female characters of everrrrrrrrr and writers need to take notes from her, cuz she is A Legend.

    1. *BIG OL' HUGS*

You do, you do. I've been re-watching it already.

YES. I love how, in that part of the Game Night episode, everyone just shows up and starts bustling around like "business as usual". They don't need to cluster around with lovey-dovey words of sympathy or support, and they also don't need to be blatantly over-cheerful or brusque. They're gentle, but in a natural, casual way.

  6. This sounds like a bucket of fun! Once I'm done bingeing my other TV shows I'll check this one out!

  7. I haven't seen this show, but I think I must now! :D

I'm always on the look out for happy, feel good kinds of shows so this sounds right up my alley. Also, as for #6, I have a thing for the dorky characters, so yet another good reason XD

Do you know where I can find the show?

Also, another bloggy friend and I are hosting a Sherlock BBC blog party for the rest of May, and I know you've mentioned Sherlock in the past so I thought I'd let you know in case you'd like to join in :)!

    Lovely post dear!! :D

    1. It's a delightful show; I thoroughly recommend it. :D (As long as one is Cool with the Content, again. xD)

Yep! I watch it on Hulu, but I believe it might also be available on Netflix?

Ahh, such fun! Thanks for letting me know! I don't think I'll be joining in this year, but I hope everyone has a blast. ;D

      Thank you! :D <3

  8. OLIVIA. Yes, yes, yes, yes. SO MUCH AGREE. I have just started watching Brooklyn Nine Nine and I am heartily in love with it. It has been on my radar for so long (!!!) and I watched some fan videos to see if I wanted to watch it and the fan videos were ADORABLE but somehow I still didn't find the time?? During quarantine, though, I FINALLY DID IT and started watching and wow!!! It has been So Good... I can always count on this show to be lighthearted and lovely and bring a smile to my face (or, as you mentioned, spit out whatever food I happen to be munching. I've had to stop mid-episode to explain the entire episode to my dad or brother if they happen to be near, because I don't want to just be dying with laughter for no reason). I've been doing quite a bit of TV watching, of late, and some of the shows are really intense/hard to watch, so I kind of use this as my "fluffy, easy to watch" show whenever other things feel too intense. It's really perfect.

Also. Jake. Just. I love him. And his relationship with Amy. And trying to love the things that she loves. And Jake's relationship with Captain Holt. And Terry. And Rosa. And the friendship and camaraderie and like, zero jealousy and platonic friendships (except... Gina's giant crush on Terry...) and JUST EVERYTHING. I love it so much.

(Random side note: I think your blog will finally let me comment on this post without issues!! Huzzah!)
