The Bookshelf Tag

The lovely Natalie of Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens has created an adorable book tag, and I'm filling it out now (duh) :D

Let's jump right in (and I'm sorry for the poor quality of the pictures)!

Describe your bookshelf (or wherever it is you keep your books-it doesn't actually have to be a shelf!) and where you got it from:

Ah, what fun!  I'm actually excited about this question, because I've been wanting to talk about my book space for a while now;)

It's short, fat, and proud of that smallish and white.  As you can see from the pictures, I've decorated it by writing a quote from Inkheart on the top, since it's so accurate, and all.

There's a problem, though - I'm almost out of space.  This means I'll have to figure out some other way of storing my books!  Oh, perish the thought!  *Note*  Since I published this, my parents have donated a much bigger bookshelf to me, so this is subject to change!

Do you have any special or different way of organizing your books?

I organize by height as much as possible, and like Natalie I keep books by the same author together (see below).

What's the thickest (most amount of pages) book on your shelf?

Les Misérables weighs in at 1,201 pages, so yeah

What's the thinnest (least amount of pages) book on your shelf?

My thinnest books (on that shelf, at least) are around 160-something pages long, I've got about three of those.

Is there a book you received as a birthday gift?

A few - not that many, but a few.  North and South is one I got for Christmas;)

What's the smallest (height and width wise) book on your shelf?

Absolute Surrender by Andrew Murray.

Ain't it cute?;)

What's the biggest (height and width wise) book on your shelf?

A big Jeeves and Wooster book!  (By the by, did you all know that P. G. Wodehouse contributed to the lyrics for the old musical Showboat?  Isn't that awesome?!)

Is there a book from a friend on your shelf?

Surprisingly, I don't think there is…huh...

Most expensive book?

I buy most of my books from thrift stores, so usually they don't cost me above $2.  However, I did use birthday money to buy my $13 copy of The Book Thief.

The last book you read on your shelf?

Yup…;)

Of all the books on your shelf, which was the first you read?

Asldfkhapdsfasldkfhaljasfpaosjl what?!?!  I don't even - probably Ella Enchanted (it's a very worn copy, hehe).

Do you have more than one copy of a book?

I don't personally own two copies of the same book, but I have my own copy of a couple books that my family has, as well.

Do you have the complete series of any book series?

Other than The Lord of the Rings, no.

What's the newest addition to your shelf?

Those two old-looking books, The Black Arrow and The Turn of the Road.  I'm excited to read them eventually, but there's a bit of a waiting list, haha;)

What book has been on your shelf FOREVER?

Oh, goodnessa few.  I don't know if I could pick out the oldest, except, again, Ella Enchanted.

What's the most recently published book on your shelf?

Moonblood from The Tales of Goldstone Wood (I was so excited when I found a copy of this at a thrift store!!).

The oldest book on your shelf (as in, the actual copy is old)?

An antique copy of Elsie's Holiday from 1889.  Ironic, seeing as how that may well be my least favorite book in one of my least favorite seriesbut gracious, do I love this copy;)

!!!!!!!!!!!

A book you won?

I think I won this…but I don't know for what...

A book you'd hate to let out of your sight (aka a book you never let someone borrow)?

None come to my mind.  Except, I do prefer to have my books for a little while before I loan them out (as in, I wouldn't really like loaning out a "new-to-me" book).

Most beat up book?

I bought this really beat up copy of Ivanhoe at a (you guessed it) thrift store, and it made me soo happy.

Most pristine book?

Most of my books are in a middling condition.  Some are super beat up, some are super pristine, but most are just kinda hanging out in the middle;)

A book from your childhood?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:)  I was probably in my tweens when I first read this, but, ya know, it counts.

A book that's not actually your book?

One Hundred and One Dalmatians is technically my dad's (and yes, it's really beat up as well).

A book with a special/different cover (e.g. leather bound, soft fuzzy cover etc.)?

Ooh, ooh!  This "pocket" copy of Jane Eyre!

It's a "special" red hardback, with gilt pages and a ribbon bookmark;D

A book that is your favorite color?

I guess my blue books come the closest:D

Book that's been on your shelf the longest that you STILL haven't read?

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle.  I WILL read it, I promise!

Any signed books?

No, ma'am, I can't say that I have any of those.

SUCH a fun tag!

Great…now I'm just jealous...

  1. Book tags are just awesome. :-)

Aaaand I may or may not have freaked out when I saw that you have LONESOME DOVE on your shelf!! Have you read it? I started reading it last spring, but after about 200 hundred pages decided I didn't really need it right now. I do plan to read it eventually, but there's a lot of language and...stuff to get through. More than the series, I think. But anyway, that made me smile. :-)

And you have Candle in the Darkness! *high five*

Wow, it looks like you've got a lot of old books. Most of mine are shamefully new. What can I say? I'm a book-buying maniac.

P.G. Wodehouse contributed to the lyrics of Showboat?! Cool! I only saw that once a loooong time ago, but I seem to remember...hm...what's that guy's name...the one with the deep voice and wide smile.... ;-P

I haven't read Les Mis yet either. I'm so terrible with classics! But I WILL conquer it someday.

Okay, I had to tilt my head and look at that last picture from all angles. That is so cool. Who does that. Now I'm just jealous too. :-)

    1. They are indeed:)

I haven't read Lonesome Dove yet, but it's contesting with a few other books for the next book on my to-read list;) Yeah, I've flipped through it a little, and there is some...sterf.

Hee, I saw "Fire by Night" in a store yesterday, and thought of you and Naomi, haha:D

Isn't that fun?! Ahem, yes...who's that guy whose laugh delights my soul far too much...can't place him...

About Les Mis...I was honestly just a little disappointed in it. *cringes* I know, I know, it's supposed to be so epic and inspiring, and it is, in a way. But there wasn't enough character development, and too much attention was given to history, at the expense of the story, for my taste. Not that I don't love history in a book, but...I think Victor Hugo carried it a bit too far. But I do plan to reread it eventually, and maybe my opinion will change;)

Isn't that crazy? Remind me to never Google images of bookshelves. It's just too much. My book-loving heart can't handle it;)

  2. Awesome! I have filled out the answers for this but I haven't gotten around to posting it yet.
I had not clue Wodehouse contributed to the lyrics of Showboat! That's really cool! I haven't actually seen Showboat yet but I have listened to music from it. :)

  3. I believe my Great Expectations copy might be from the same line as your Jane Eyre book. My Great Expectations copy is also small, bright red, ribbon bookmark...all the same as your Jane Eyre.

    1. Maybe not though? I think mine is a lot smaller in size, other than that they are about identical.

    2. Really? That's so cool! I love that copy; it was an exciting moment when I found it;)

Hmm...well, I think the picture made it look a lot bigger than it really is. Mine is about the height of my hand, from the base of the palm to the top of my middle finger.

    3. Mine is that small as well. : )
I love my copy of Great Expectations! It is so small and pretty. I always think reading a book is more fun with a pretty copy!

    4. Aren't they fun?;D
Oh, I agree! I don't have too many like that, but if it's just got a nice smooth feel to it, or if it's really old, or small like my Jane Eyre...sigh. Makes me smile:)

Me too! I have an old bundle of French magazines - I don't frequently read them (French, y'know, it reminds me of school :-P) but I'll often just LOOK at it with "ahhhhh" inscribed in my eyes. :-) And smelling them... yes. Old book-smells = love it.

    4. Soary. :-P You see, my dad is English, my mum is Dutch - and in Belgium (which is where I live) one *has* to learn French as the country is half French half Dutch. And German - well, it's not hard because it's really similar to Dutch, so I chose to study that instead of Latin (my dad gave me the choice.) So if you look at it that way, it's not that big. :-)

But thanks for the compliment, m'dear! :-) I'm really enjoying your blog, by the way.

    5. Ohh--now I understand *in Lady Catherine's voice*

That's so awesome! I take Latin myself, and I know a little sign language, but I'd love to learn French *sigh*

You're quite welcome! And aww, thanks so much!!!

I have that same edition of North and South! I'm reading it right now for the very first time.

I thought The Black Arrow was heaps of fun. Your copy looks cooler than mine.

Your copy of Jane Eyre is gorgeous!
