"Oh! The seaside!"

"The sea, the sea, the sea.  It rolled and rolled and called to me.  Come in, it said, come in." ~ Sharon Creech

Hello, lovelies!  I do apologize for my slight absence lately; I've been at the beach with my family!

It was a nice break, despite the unfortunate fact that we couldn't get into the water:(  We got to do some shopping and movie/tv-watching and reading, etc.

I think I'll just mention a couple things that happened/that I bought, and then post a poem that I wrote while there:)

Shopping
Lots of shopping!  I got, all in all:  three novels, an authentic-looking journal, a movie, an old inkwell, and one of those things that they used to blot/seal their letters (you know, the powder-keg that they'd shake over the paper?).  Want some pictures?  Well, I'm going to give you some, whether you want them or not, hehehe;)

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

I was really excited to find this for only about $5, because I've been wanting to read the original novel from whence the epicness that is the musical sprung;)  (That sentence sounds hideously un-grammatical.)

Isn't this journal cool?!  It's got linen pages, people.  Linen pages!!!  I'm just a wee bit excited;)  And I also found a great feather when I was beach combing, and I'm hoping to use that, with my inkwell, for this journal:)

1984 by George Orwell

I started reading a little bit of this, and I was rather surprised; I really enjoyed what I read!  Usually, futuristic stories are just not my thing, but this one holds a lot of promise:D

Song of Erin by BJ Hoff

This one I bought basically for the gorgeousness that is the cover.  I mean, it has a Claddagh ring!  I did like the little bit that I skimmed through before I bought it, so we'll see how it turns out.  I don't read much Christian fiction romance, because I've been there and done that with that genre, if you know what I mean.  There was a time when that was almost all I read, and let me tell you, I read some mediocre, not to mention inappropriate, stuff.  But there were those few exceptions which proved to be good reads, so hopefully this will be one of them:)

I also bought the writing accessories, and The Prince of Egypt on VHS, but I didn't get pictures of those, and I'm too lazy to go back and do it, haha;)

TV shows
We started Call the Midwife, and now we're kind of hooked;)  It can be a bit awkward to watch with mixed genders, due to the subject matter *ahERM*, but it's entertaining and interesting.

I saw Cinderella!!!

And believe me, a review will be forthcoming!!  Wow, I loved it:D  I mean, it may well be one of the sweetest and most adorable things in recent history.  Can I get an 'amen'?!;)  Oh, and can we talk about how Perfect with a capital P Lily James was as Cinderella?!  I've seen a number of Cinderellas, but she was without doubt the best I've seen.  SO. PRECIOUS.  (Oh, OH, and when *SPOILERS* Kit's father is dying, and he curls up on his chest like a little boy--WHAT WAS THAT?!?!  I was dying.  Both I and my mom, actually.  I mean, this is supposed to be Disney!!  I'm not supposed to get emotionally affected by this!)  Anyway, I'm gonna save it for the review, but…wow.  I liked it;)

Poem
So, I wrote this poem while I was there, but…well, it's a bit…sentimental:-/  And basically mushy and romantical and…yeah.  And if it sounds at all pantheistic or naturalistic, I do apologize--that wasn't my intent.  So yup, don't look too hard; it's not the best;)  Anyway, enough apologizing; here it is:

Rising, falling, crashing, sighing;
Your waves a timeless orchestration play.
And here, standing on the shore,
On my knees, to God, I suddenly fall.
Breathless, I breathe,
Speechless, I speak
A prayer of thanks for the splendor
Of such a glorious junction of land and sky.

Irresistibly, my heart longs an impossible longing
To be engulfed, flooded, enveloped by your oceanic depths;
To run from the rigid solidity of land into your cold embrace,
Where body may be in peril but soul in freedom;
To become a part, somehow, of the majestic offering you are -
The offering of glory to Creator God.

O, sea, were I not haply convinced
That Heaven is a better destination far
Than any this finite world can boast -
Were I not joyfully sure He has a better plan for me -
I might almost pray God, on my exit from this world,
To let me, as the merfolk in tales of old,
Foam upon thine ageless face become.

  1. The 2015 Cinderella is, by far, the best live-action remake of the story that I have ever seen! I'll give you the 'amen'. :)
That dress through! It's so fluffy, I'm gonna die! Yeah, that seen was really sad. My sister cried, and I just sat there in shocked silence.

That is a really good poem!

    1. Thanks for the amen!;) Yes! For me, I think it ties with "Ever After," but it might win out in time:) Yes, the dress!!! HAHA I loved that reference;) I mean…the transformation and it's so blue and frothy and delicate and gorgeous and oh!!!
THAT. SCENE. My mom cried, and I basically did what you did;) I mean…it was SO heartbreaking, but at the same time, it was just SO FLIPPIN' SWEET that I didn't even know how to handle it;)

      Aww, thank you!

  2. You haven't read Phantom of the Opera? You are really in for a treat, it's such a great book. I'll love to hear your thoughts on it.

It's a very pretty poem, sentimental but in a poetic way. (I don't know if it's just me, but I can vividly imagine Anne Shirley reciting that poem with a distant look in her eyes)

    1. Yes, I'm excited!!! I'll probably be reviewing it:)

Thanks! Haha, yes, come to think of it, so can I! I was in a very sentimental mood that day, because I'd spent about twenty minutes just gazing at the ocean;)

  3. I just started watching the first episode of Call the Midwife last night....I didn't get to finish it yet though. It looked interesting! Looks like you found some great things to bring home with you, and your poem is lovely! Beaches are so inspiring and beautiful...looking at the ocean just makes you stop everything and be in the moment. I just went to the beach yesterday with my family!

    1. Oh, I hope you can finish! It's really interesting (despite being REALLY intense). Yup, I did! Aww, thank you:) They certainly are! I just...wow. They're so timeless and beautiful! You did? That's such a neat coincidence!:D

    2. Yes...we actually live pretty close to several beaches and need to start taking advantage of that more often!

  4. Oh! Your poem is so beautiful. No, I don't think it's too naturalistic-- it's a song of praise to the Creator. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Sounds like you had a great time! Oooh, I haven't seen Cinderella yet, but I keep hearing people rave about it, so I might just have to yet. ;-P

I hear you about Christian fiction-- I myself have a love/hate relationship with the genre. I have a few favorite authors I keep up with and once in a while I'll come across a REALLY amazing book, but on the whole....it gets tiring. I'm finding I much prefer older historical fiction. (Random insert-- have you ever heard of Elswyth Thane?)

Oh, I want to see Call the Midwife!!!!

Thanks for telling us a little about your trip. :-)

    1. Whew, thanks! I'm glad it wasn't too...whatever:)

Yes, you should! Of course, different people will have different reactions, but my parents even liked it (and I'm not sure that they were expecting to enjoy it, hehe).

Yep, that genre can be...somethin'. Like you said, there is that rare jewel of a book, but overall...it's kind of same old, same old:-/ I think I heard of Elswyth Thane over at your Down in the Valley--isn't she the one who wrote that Yankee Stranger with the swoon-worthy cover? I should check her out, regardless:D I love old historical fiction!:)

Yes, you should try CTM! It is pretty darn graphic with the birthings *cough cough* but nothing very distasteful, and I can only recall one scene that got a bit too uncomfortable (and even that was between a married couple). So, all that long rambly-ness to say, yes, I'd recommend it:D

Aww, thanks for bearing with the telling!;)

  5. Yay, Phantom of the Opera! The book is very good, although a bit different from the musical. I have to say I like the musical better (which by the way I saw LIVE the day before yesterday squeeee!!!) but the book is still very enjoyable....and sad. :(
Oh my!!! That journal. Is Amazing.
That Christian fiction book cover is sooo beautiful, I'm a not a big Christian fiction reader either (for the reasons you mentioned) but I have discovered some good ones. Have you read With Every Letter by Sarah Sundin? (It's SO amazing)
Prince of Egypt is epic. Pure amazing-ness. :)
Cinderella!!!! I'm dyyyyiiinng to see it! Unfortunately my family aren't big movie theater goers, so I'm gonna have to wait till it comes out on dvd. -sigh-
Your poem was beautiful! I love the beach. :)
