Robin Hood Week | | Appreciation for the 1973 Disney film.

~ the nostalgia of all of it the opening sequence ~

~ the amazingly atmospheric quality of the whole thing ~

~ the unforgettable villains ~

"AH-ha, AH-ha!"

{I once made the mistake of saying that "no one will ever be as Prince John-ish as Toby Stephens," and I would like to formally recant that dreadful statement.  Toby Stephens' P.J. is wonderful and all, but I cannot imagine how I finagled myself into neglecting Peter Ustinov's performance.  Let the record now state that I believe that no one will ever be as Prince John-ish as Peter Ustinov and Toby Stephens.  Okay.  Good.}

~ Maid Marian ~

~ the animation ~

~ the joy and fun and whimsy ~

~ Friar Tuck ~

"GET OUTTA MY CHURCH!!!"

~ the "Not in Nottingham" sequence ~

{I have a strange infatuation with that song and that scene.}

~ Kluckie ~

~ the quotability ~

{"Hiss, you deliberately dodged." ~ "Oo-de-lally!  A crown!  How exciting!" ~ "Crime-a-niddly, Nutsy!" ~ "Forgive me a cruel chuckle . . . " ~ "HISS!  You're never around when I need you!" ~ "WAAAAAAHN o'clah-ahck, an' AAAAAALLLL'S WE-OHLL!"}

~ the fact that all the characters seem like old friends ~

~ the "Phony King of England" dance ~

~ Skippy & his gang ~

~ the jailbreak scene ~

*Spoilers . . . ?  (I'm pretty sure y'all could see this coming, but just in case. ;))*

~ the deliciously happy, satisfactory, storybook ending :) ~

  1. YES I love this movie!! One of my childhood favorites. <3

    This Robin Hood week looks like so much fun! I might end up participating--we shall see. ;)

    P.S. I watched the first episode of the Robin Hood BBC show yesterday!! I enjoyed it so I'm thinking I'll continue to watch the series. ;) Is there much objectionable content in it, out of curiosity?

      It'd be fun to have you, Mary!

      GAAHHHH WHAT DID YOU REALLY?! Yaaaaaassss, keep watching it! Especially 'cause it gets better (in terms of quality) after the first few episodes (although, of course, I like the first episodes, too ;)). Okay, as to content: there isn't that much, although Guy makes some crass comments at times (there's really only one that comes to mind) and we find out that he impregnated one of the castle kitchen girls. Will Scarlet finds out that a certain character is a girl because he accidentally walks up on her after she was bathing or changing or something, but it's more comical than inappropriate, and we don't see much of anything (I don't think). In the third season, a character is introduced who is fleeing an abusive husband and who flirts with Prince John rather . . . strangely. :-P Also in the third season, there's one episode where a new character is having an affair with a married woman, and they show the two of them in bed together (not graphically, though) before they are interrupted (as best as I can recall; it's been a while). I thiiiiiiiiink that's it, but if you come across anything else I do apologize. :-P You can also ask Natalie -- she might be able to tell you more! :) I don't recall much of any language.

    2. (Also there's violence, obviously, but I could handle it, and if *I* could handle it, that tells you something. :-P)

    3. (And -- last one, I think -- we also find out about another affair, but I can't say any more than that for spoileric reasons. ;))

    4. Awesome, thanks so much, Olivia! :D I'll definitely have to watch more of the series soon. *nods*

  6. Okay, I admit I don't have quite as much nostalgia and love for this film as some do, but it IS so good and adorable and I do like it very very much. I want to watch it again now. <3

    Also, I love how old Disney animated films were just so artistic and BEAUTIFUL. Practically every shot is a work of art. <3

      I KNOW RIGHT. Like . . . wow. #respect

    2. Oh no! I DO like it a LOT...and I did watch it when I was younger. I guess I meant it's just not the FIRST movie that comes to mind when I think of childhood Disney movies. ;)

  8. YES!!! Haha, this was a favourite movie of ours when we grew up (and for all the kids STILL growing up ;P). It really was amazing, the way they did it! I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the characters (especially Marian and Kluckie <3) and how it's SO easy to quote! Hehe, basically every line of the movie is awesome. ;D We were remarking the other day, the wonderful names Prince John had for Sir Hiss: "Silly Serpent, "Reluctant Reptile" etc... HAHA. XD

  9. Hear, hear! All these are part of why I love this film so much. I'm also oddly fond of the "Not in Nottingham" song and sequence. Used to sing it whenever I was feeling melancholy when I was a little kid.

    Peter Ustinov is the perfect Prince John, even though we only hear his voice! "Forgive me a cruel chuckle."

    1. I'M SO GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO'S INTO "NOT IN NOTTINGHAM." I often think of it on rainy days. And yes, "melancholy" is the perfect word -- pleasantly melancholy, somehow.

      Sooooo good. (My parents and I are re-watching Anne of Avonlea, and my dad pointed out that Mrs. Harris sounds sort of like a female counterpart of Ustinov's PJ. Which . . . she kind of does. Her inflections, mannerisms, and the way she rolls her 'r's are all strangely similar. I was geeking out for a while. :-P)

    2. LOL! I can see that about Mrs. Harris and PJ. Too funny!

  10. YES!!!! Love it all!! One of my favorite Disney classics!!:D

  11. I'm still looking for a good Robin Hood show/movie. I tried to like the Disney cartoon...just couldn't. I recently tried to re-watch the Costner Robin Hood on Netflix...just couldn't get through it. I enjoyed the book as a kid, but most of the movies and shows haven't successfully captured the elements that interested me. I think I did see some older ones that I liked...but it has been so long ago that I can't remember which they were.

    1. Stanley, wow, I keep finding out about comments to which I never replied. *facepalm* So sorry to have left this hanging for so long!

      Aw, that's a shame. :-/ I hope you find one, soon! Yes, I expected to dislike the Costner Robin Hood (as I mentioned in my review) but then liked it. Oh, I think one of my brothers was quite fond of the Roger Lancellyn Green book! (I never read the whole thing.) Do you like the original Howard Pyle book, or is there a different one you prefer?

      I just recently watched one of the old movies (the Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland version) for the first time and liked it quite a lot! I'm also interested in watching whichever one had Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn.

      Like I said, I hope you find a version that works for you soon! Thanks for commenting :)
