Featuring:  Eight Fictional Ships That Should Have Sailed and The Girl Who's Still Mad That They Didn't.

(Which I guess means that you could consider this whole post one big SPOILER?  Idk.  It's your call.)

⎼ ⎼ ⎼

You know what I'm talking about.  We all have those couples who needle at the back of our brains because they didn't get the ending we thought they deserved.  And sometimes the best way to cope with the injustices of a cruel team of creative directors fate is to just thrash it all out.

So here we are.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does cover the couples who've been most actively milling around in my mind lately.  And I gotta say, I've loved writing this post, delving back into all the reasons why I love them and why, in MY fictional universe, they all live happily ever after. ♡

(I defy you to watch some of these fanvids and not agree with me.)

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Rey & Poe

"You know what you are?"

"What?"

"You're difficult.  Really difficult."

"You ⎼ "

"You're a difficult man."

"You are ⎼ mmm."

I HAVE BOARDED THIS SHIP WITH MY HEART & SOUL IN TOW AND I WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP EVEN IF IT CRASHES & BURNS & EXPLODES INTO MOONDUST.

But, like, whatever.  It's fine either way.  I'm not invested.

*coughs*

To be clear, I do appreciate & acknowledge the Finnrey and Reylo people out there.  Absolutely, I do.  I see what you see, boo.  But for me, personally?

I'm Damerey all the way.

Why?

Well, for starters, there's the fact that their chemistry is off the freakin' charts, in my book.  (Y'all really wanna watch these two toddlers elegantly yelling at each other because they so badly want to be out Fightin' Intergalactic Crime together, AND see Rey pull that LiTeRaL AnGeL sMiLe while telling him that he's "difficult," AND see him bite his lip and splutter inarticulately in response, and then tell me that they're only ever supposed to be friends?  Yeah, sure, okay.)

But in addition to that, there's just something about the idea of them together that feels very Right.  Like it says in that collage up there:  "Stay close to people who feel like sunshine."  I have a Sense about these two, y'all.  An Inkling.  They would be a sunshine couple.  (And we already know, I love sunshine couples.)  The boy who's spent his life navigating the stars and the girl who's spent hers scavenging the sand would be a force to be reckoned with.

#theforceawakens #starwars #damerey #poerey #bb8 #poedameron #rey

I ship it, y'all.  I ship it like FedEx.

Another major factor, for me, is one that others have already pointed out: the disparity in the way Poe treats her compared to the way Kylo treats her.  Again, others put this into words, not me, but basically:  Kylo told her she was nothing.  Poe knew who she was before they even met, and he let her know that.  He gave her back a sense of significance.  He told her that she mattered, and that people saw her and appreciated her.  (Not that Rey needed Poe to do that ⎼ my girl is a Queen in her own right and it would be laughable to insinuate that her self-confidence is dependent on any man.  But the fact remains.)

They're both committed to effecting change and doing whatever it takes to make the world a better place.  They both exude this infectious, exuberant zest for life despite not having the absolute greatest experiences with it so far.  We also have verified intel that they would both ⎼ in a heartbeat, without question ⎼ die for 1) Finn, 2) BB-8, and 3) Leia, respectively.

In sum:  Scrappy little freedom fighters who are just similar enough and just different enough to make a certified Power Couple?  I stan, and I will stan forever.  (Unless, of course, someday I don't.  But I'm pretty sure I will stan forever.  Also, this music video is sASSY™ and it makes me happy.)

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Bella & Vernon

"When's the last time you were hugged?"

"It's been a while."

Y'all already know my feelings about this one.  It was, in my opinion, a Creative Error to leave Bella with Billy at the end of the film.  I love Billy.  Billy's great.  I understand why he and Bella make a good couple.

But Vernon and Bella, y'all.  Vernon and Bella.

In this instance, it's not so much that I think Bella is astronomically more congenial with Vernon than with Billy ⎼ because, again, I get why Bella/Billy 'works'.  But I do think that Bella/Vernon would work just as well, if not better.  And I ship them more because of the history & the sweetness & the coziness of their friendship.  I mean, come on:  Vernon and his twins come over to thank Bella for one helpful act, and then the four of them sort of just mutually decide, "Yeah, okay, we're adopting each other now."

They're adorable.  They're Very Wholesome.  And there is definitely romantic potential there.  (In case you were wondering, my alternate ending for the story is Bella and Billy splitting amicably and Bella and Vernon getting married some years later.  And having a baby boy ⎼ probably naming him Alfie ⎼ so the twins have a brother. 😛)

And, because this couple is cRIMINALLY underrepresented in fanart circles, here's a fanvid that I made myself.  (Nothing like a little self-promo, right? 😄)

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Ruby & Whale

"Maybe there's still some stuff you can fix."

#Frankenwolf

IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL YEARS AND I AM STILL NOT OVER THIS.

This couple had so. much. freakin'. potential.  And what did Adam & Eddie do with that potential?  They SQUANDERED it, that's what.  Left it alone to rot, is what they did.  Such artistic irresponsibility.  Shaking my head.

(I wouldn't want you to get the idea that I'm, like, bitter over this.)

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE UNAWARE, let me give you a little bit of Once Upon a Time trivia, free of charge:  Ruby and Whale are the "real world," Storybrooke aliases of Red (Little Red Riding Hood) and Victor (Frankenstein).

Except this version of Little Red Riding Hood happens to also be the wolf from the original tale.  She's both hunter and hunted in this scenario.  She's a werewolf, and she loses her "human" consciousness every time she morphs, so she doesn't know about the lives she's taken until she reverts to her human form ⎼ until it's too late.

And this version of Frankenstein wasn't just slapping together an undead human down in his laboratory because Hey, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time.  No, he's trying to revive his dead brother.  It's not so much that he wants to be able to create life; it's that he wants to be able to restore life.  Beloved, dearly missed life.

Once Upon A Time Red and Victor | once upon a time # frankenwolf # ruby lucas # dr. whale

I presume that you already know that this all blows up in their faces.  But exactly how bad does it get, you ask?

Red ⎼ again, in the "unconscious" werewolf form that she doesn't know how to control ⎼ kills and eats her boyfriend.

Victor succeeds in bringing his brother back to "life," but the form of life that is created in the process is agonizingly painful for the subject, grotesque, and dangerous to others.  Victor's already fractured family shatters, and both brother and father end up dead.

NEEDLESS TO SAY, when they "wake up" in Storybrooke after the curse is broken, they both experience some Difficulties in coming to a place of accepting themselves, or even of seeing themselves as worthy of life.  In fact, at one point Red has to crash Victor's suicide attempt.

And she does.  And she succeeds in talking him back to a place where he can recognize meaning and purpose in his life.  She convinces him that even though they've both unintentionally perpetuated terrible pain, they have a chance to reclaim their own lives.  She convinces him that his skill as a doctor is still valuable and necessary, that there are still people who need his help.

And he takes her advice.  He goes and helps those people.  And then we get this:

"Thank you . . . monster to monster."

EXCUSE ME WHILST I GO IMPLODE.

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Tara & Ronin

"There's that smile."

Tara and Ronin

Did these two get all of, like, ten minutes of screen time together?  Yes.  Is the [DREADFUL & UNJUST] way their relationship played out still the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about this movie?  Yes.

IT WAS NOT OKAY, I TELL YOU.

And, worse, it was unnecessary.  In my opinion.  I'm not saying that everything always has to wrap up with a perfect fairytale bow at the end of every kid's movie.  It shouldn't, in fact.  But THAT?  That was a low blow.  A jerk move, if you will.  (You're telling me that despite all the other fantastical happenings in the show, it's suddenly "too much" to ask people to suspend their disbelief for a little resurrection trope?  Pssh.)
⎼⎼⎼⎼

Maleficent & Diaval

"Well, thank you very much.  'I need you, Diaval.  I can't do this without you, Diaval.'"

"I can hear you."

"Maleficent" (2014) - Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) & Sam Riley (Diaval) >> FWD: "'Diaval' is close to the Irish version of the devil's name: 'diabhal.' Bh is a digraph in Irish that represents a lenited /b/ or /bʲ/, pronounced [w] and [v], respectively; in diabhal, it's really a /b/, so it's mostly pronounced [w], but in some dialects it's [v]. So Diaval would be kind of a semi-pseudo-phonetic spelling of diabhal in some dialects..." Thanks to: Janus Bahs Jacquet Mar 17 | scifi.stackexchange.com

THESE TWOOOOOOOO. ♡  I'm a fan of these two. 😁

From the very beginning, the only thing I ever wanted from a sequel to the first movie was Official Confirmation of this relationship moving to couple status.  Aaaaaaand, did I get that?

. . . No.

In Mistress of Evil, Disney never gave us any more romantic content between these two.  Nary a kiss, nary an "I love you."  Some would say that Disney never intended to even imply the possibility of a Maleval romance ⎼ that they're supposed to be friends and nothing else.  And perhaps that's true.  One can hardly speak for Disney's intentions. 😉  But one can speak for Disney's production, and Disney's production is a pair of people whose relationship is literally begging to become a romance.

And before you question me, keep in mind what my mother ⎼ who had seen the first film only once, years ago ⎼ said to me, unbidden, about ten minutes into the sequel:

"Maybe they'll get married one day.  He loves her, and he understands her."

He loves her, and he understands her.  There aren't many people in Maleficent's life who do that.  And in contrast, she loves him, and she trusts him.  There aren't many people in her life of whom she could say that.

THEY ARE A COUPLE.  Okay?  Finito.  I have spoken.

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Liesel & Max

"One was a book thief.  The other stole the sky."

I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right.”

BEFORE YOU COME AFTER ME for putting the relationship between a child and a man on this list, let me explain.

I am not, in fact, a pedophile.   Nor am I in support of pedophilic relationships.  I would not want Liesel and Max to be anything CLOSE to "a thing" until Liesel was well into adulthood.

LET ME REPEAT:  I would not want Liesel and Max to be anything CLOSE to "a thing" until Liesel was well into adulthood.

All's I'm saying is, given their shared history and their commonalities and their deep love for each other, I COULD SEE them deciding to get married much later in life.

And . . . I think they'd make a pretty dang good couple, were they so inclined.

That's all's I'm saying, that is. 😜

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Jack & Liz

"What a year, huh?"

"Lemon, it's February."

Pin for Later: Just Friends: TV's Best Platonic Pals Liz and Jack, 30 Rock

Probably the most Chaotic™ workplace relationship you will ever encounter in your life.  So chaotic and strange, in fact, that I fully respect the decision of the writers to keep the relationship consistently platonic.  These two never become romantically involved, though they and everyone else talk and joke about the weird possibility a lot.

Nonetheless, there are just enough flirty moments between them to make me ship it.  And in addition to the [admittedly VERY odd 😂] chemistry, I love their friendship.  So dorky and symbiotic and no-holds-barred.  And how's about the adorable train-wreck that was Jack trying to tell Lemon he loves her (albeit as a friend) at the end of the finale? *grins*

I know I keep saying it, but potential, y'all.  Potential.

30 Rock Season 4 Episode 14: Future Husband. "It's the hug plane, coming in for approach...you're cleared for landing."

⎼⎼⎼⎼

Rory & Jess

"But . . . you're over that, right?"

"Yep, long over."

TEAM JESS ❤️

I said just about everything I want to say about this couple in this post.

Essentially:  There are many reasons why these two did not end up as a couple at the end of the series, and those reasons are healthy and valid.  There are many reasons why this couple shouldn't be Endgame™ right now; but there are also many reasons why I believe that going forward, they will be.

⎼ ⎼ ⎼

There's my pitch, dudettes.
Do you have similar feelings about any of these couples?
Did the fan videos give you emotions?
What are some couples you wish had ended up together?

  1. Yeah, sorry, I hardly remember any Rey and Poe moments. I was lowkey ReyFinn, now hardcore Reylo, with ReyFinn second. Maybe much, much later it would happen naturally, after Rey lives her life a little. The friendship to romance thing, on her part, I for one prefer to ignore the-not-really-Finn moment in the mostly awful Last Jedi. Rey was the one for him. He would wait.

Bella and Vernon, yes! I had this spoiled before I saw it, but seeing posts was the only way I would've even known about the film. Billy was so random. Sure, it's realistic, but I prefer Vernon and Bella. And yes, he cared. I like your alternative ending, she gets a boy, realizes he is so, and then gets her man.

Liesel and Max. Yes! I don't see how they could have been anything other than together. Rudy was her first love obviously, but yeah, it was such a perfect friendship (its sad that this has to be qualified) that would have transitioned properly into a romantic relationship. Well into adulthood in that time would have been a few years after the book (I think she was 16 when it ended?). People matured faster, they had to.

I don't know any of the other couples. I need to keep a running list of couples that I think should have ended up together, I feel like I maybe wouldn't finish books or movies when I don't like the pairings, so I can't think of any others besides the oft-named Jo and Laurie (sorry, broken record here).

    1. Well, to be fair, there weren't that many Rey/Poe moments TO remember. Okay but yes: like . . . why did they insert the random Rose/Finn subplot if they were just going to . . . never touch it again? I didn't really WANT them to touch it again, because I don't ship Rose/Finn, but still.

Yes!! I love Billy, and I "get" why a relationship with him was important for Bella. BUT I still maintain that long-term, she and Vernon would be the way to go.

Exactly! That's how I see it: she's already 16 when they're reunited, so it's totally not outlandish to suppose that they might end up together.

Gotcha. Sometimes when I get a post idea I retroactively wish I'd kept better mental "tabs" on whatever the subject of the post is.

  2. While I absolutely loved Rise of Skywalker and evening with Ben and Rey (like, that was what I was hoping for and they did it so THANK YOU), I do think that Damerey has something going for it. I've seen people compare the latest trilogy to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Esmeralda (Rey) has Frollo (Kylo) only see the worst of her, and Quasimodo (Finn) only see the best of her, but Pheobus (Poe) is an equal to her because he sees all of her. That doesn't completely line up, but it's something to think about.

I just saw This Beautiful Fantastic and OH MY WORD. IT IS GORGEOUS! Ah!!!! I had never heard about it until reading your post on it, so THANK YOU SO MUCH! One of my new favorites. I shipped Bella and Billy from the first moment. <3 Lately I've really been into awesome friendships between girls and guys so I was just so happy that Bella and Vernon were such best friends (This also goes with my opinion on Rey and Finn, the are the dictionary definition of "best friends"). Everything made me so happy. <3

Okay, so I have seen a total of two Gilmore Girls episodes with Jess, but I WILL SHIP HIM AND RORY TO MY GRAVE. One of the first episodes that I saw had him (I think it was season 3?) and I decided to watch from the beginning to get to see him and Rory. My sister didn't see that episode but has watched others with me and she ships Rory and Dean, which is so wrong! I'm finally greeting to Jess again in season 2 and EEEEP. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE.

    Fun post!!

    1. I see you! WHOA, I'd never thought to draw that Star Wars/Hunchback parallel. O.o You're right, it doesn't completely work, but it is a really interesting idea.

YES YOUR POST MADE ME SO HAPPY. I just love to pieces that you watched it and loved it. :D Haha, that's fair: platonic guy/girl friendships are super important, too!

SAME, GIRL, SAME. Jess has problems galore when he and Rory are teenagers, and I totally understand why it was healthy and necessary for them to break up for a loooooong time. BUT STILL AND YET.

      Thanks! :)

  3. F;ASDLKFJA;SDLKFJ;ASDKFJ;ASDKFJASD;KFJ YOU SAID MAX AND LIESELLLLLLLLLL!!! I shipped (and still do...) them *so hard* the first time I watched it and I didn't know how it was gonna end... so I was actually *quite shocked and hurt* when they didn't end up together. *sniffs* Like you said... IT'S NOT CREEPY. They would only be *together* when they are OLDER, duhhhhhh. Like. What. Obviously their friendship when she is a little-ish girl is just friendship and shared trauma/recovery and almost brother-sister vibes. Which is ADORABLE and I love them together even then... but not in a weird way. I just feel like all that builds a great *foundation* for a relationship AS ADULTS. My brother and I just recently had this same conversation and he was like "that's weird, he's an adult when she's a child" but like... he's maybe 18 or 19 and she's like 12 or so??? So like, yeah, there is a definite age gap but I don't think it's the worst ever. Maybe not ideal, but again -- they've been through a lot of the same things and I kind of feel like that makes them being together a *special exception.* I don't know, dude. They are just SUPER CUTE together and I wanted *mutual happiness,* you know??

Also Tara and Ronin are HIGHKEY the only reason to watch Epic at all, because... I'm not really about the weird teenage romance between the two main characters (drawing a blank on their names?). And then they don't really get much story together, soooooo yeah. Guess that leaves me sort of disappointed with Epic as a whole?

As far as Star Wars goes... I haven't seen all 3 of the newer movies?? Just the last one -- Rise of Skywalker, right?? Personally, I really liked Ben and Rey together. Their story was fun because they had like... sort of spark of attraction but they were also supposed to be diametrically opposed morally at the same time?? I think that's an amusing/interesting dynamic. BUT. I also felt like Finn was hardcore a little sad and friendzoned by Rey... so I guess I would have shipped them??? But like... I also like Poe?? So I'd be chill with him and Rey as well. Honestly, Rey is just so precious and has that "buddy chemistry" with ALL theses boys?!! I'd ship her with any one of them she chose. :)))

    1. YES. I've shipped Max & Liesel from the beginning and I'm pretty sure I'll ship them till the end. I mean, technically (at least in the book), there's a larger age gap between them. But I think the older the younger party gets, the less problematic an age gap becomes. And I still don't think the age gap between those two, specifically, is a deal-breaker. I KNOW, I need them both to be happy after everything. (And they would be, even if they weren't together, but you know what I mean.)

I AM STILL VERY SALTY about the fact that Nod & M.K. (the teenage couple) got to kiss, but Tara & Ronin got THAT excuse for an ending. *scowls*

Honestly, that's pretty much my feeling, too. I ship Rey & Poe MOST, but I would be genuinely happy with Rey & Finn, too. (And I certainly have Many Feelings about Rey & Ben, too. But THAT'S too complicated to get into right now, lol.)

  5. YES, YES AND YES. MUCH YES.

VERNON AND BELLA!!! We've definitely had conversations about this in the past, but akjghfadkjhglafkj I ship it so stinkin' much!!! And I loooove the video you made for them! The song is perfection! So much cuteness!! ^.^ <3

Awwww Tara and Ronin *sobs* Not cool movie making people, not cool. I would have 100% supported that resurrection trope ;D

Yes! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who ships Liesel and Max!!

Awww I was always so torn over who Rory should end up with! I use to be hardcore Team Dean, but then certain *cough* THINGS happened, and I boycotted that ship so fast XD. And now I am like 96% Team Jess, but I do like Logan a lot. If Jess hadn't had such a chip on his shoulder for the first several seasons than I would definitely ship them more, but it always bothered me that he blew people off so much. But when he came back later and had really grown up and improved a lot, that was when I finally thought yes, this should be a thing. And that video gave me all the feels!! <3 <3

I loved this post Olivia!! Anything that involves ships makes my fangirl heart very happy ;)

Literally such a golden opportunity for a resurrection trope. *huffs*

      Oh, you're certainly not!

Lolol, exactly. Dean WAS fantastic and sweet and wrongly treated . . . buuuuuuuuut then, as you said, Things Happened. :-P I haven't seen enough of Logan to have that much of an opinion on him, so I can't fairly judge him. But I totally understand having reservations due to Jess's past behavior. It's definitely a serious issue!

Ahhhh, thanks! It honestly made my fangirl heart very happy, too. :D

  6. *sees post* *gets the popcorn*

You know I'm always down to talk about Couples Who Should Have Been a Thing. xD

Sooooooooooooooooooooo ... with RoS and the sequel trilogy in general, I'm just gonna come right out and say it. I ship Poe and Finn. And I'm not a little ticked at Disney for refusing to explore the possibility of the two of them being in love. Because I hear you about seeing the chemistry between Poe and Rey: but I look at any scene with Finn and Poe in it together and I'm like, a) THE SPARKAGE, and b) WE WERE ROBBED. So that's my little take on that, there. xD #stormpilot

I don't see Ben and Rey ever being a good long term couple (even if he'd lived), but I love that they got to share that sweet, romantic moment before he died. I don't, however, "see" Rey with any of the other characters, romantically, even in the future ... she may meet somebody new down the road and fall in love, but my brain isn't satisfied at the thought of her with either Poe or Finn. Mostly, it is true, because I ship them with EACH OTHER. But still.

I love Max and Liesel as friends. And the first time I read the book, I did want them to get married at some point in the future? Now, though, looking back, and having had my own opinions/experiences shift ... I think I would prefer to see Liesel with somebody new. I can't exactly explain why; it's NOT that I think Max would be in any way an unsuitable partner for her, I'm sure he'd be great. He's Max, after all, our Good Boi. It's just ... well ... idk ... I think sometimes after experiencing really really REALLY traumatic things, it's good to move on and form new relationships with ppl who didn't go through those exact same traumatic things with you? Not always, obviously. It's not a hard or fast rule or anything. But I get the feeling in this case that it's something which could be helpful for Liesel.

My absolute biggest "couple who should've been a thing" will always be Clintasha from the MCU; but you've heard all about them already. ;-)

    1. ;D ;D ;D

Haha, I'm not a Finn/Poe shipper, but that would certainly complicate trying to ship REY with either of them. xD

And, actually, I see what you mean about it maybe being more natural for Rey to fall for someone entirely new later on in life; about neither of the boys being COMPLETELY right for her. I still would be more than happy to see her with either Poe or Finn, but I understand and appreciate why they didn't "lock her in" to one relationship with either of them. There hadn't been enough development for that to have seemed organic. (Down the road, as you say, it's a different matter, and I do mightily ship her and Poe down the road. But I get what you mean. ;D)

That's valid. I definitely think that it is important to not stay isolated in this tight little bubble of ONLY the people who were with you during the most traumatic moments of your life. At the same time, it's not an issue I *personally* see for Max and Liesel, but I totally get why, for other readers, it would be. I like how the book doesn't concretely tell us one way or another; everyone can interpret it for themselves.

I definitely see you on Clintasha. I definitely do. ;)

  7. Ooohhh, JUICYYY. XD

Hmm... dang, now I'm torn on Rey. I honestly don't know what I think, haha. TBH my favourite theory atm is that she is cool enough going solo; she don't need a guy. ;) One of my sisters thinks she should be with Finn, but I don't personally think that would be the best choice. He's so sweet, but I don't feel the chemistry as much. Kylo and Rey seem like a mad power couple, but Kylo is... Kylo. Ehhh. And then Poe... he's also pretty cool going solo! I always liked Poe a lot (though he can be a little frustrating and I wanna shake him sometimes), but danggg, that video got me. So now I'm like... mayyyybe??? I definitely cannot deny that there is a spark... but right now, I'm happy with my girl standing alone. ;)

Bella and Vernon, though!! I was so shocked/disappointed when she didn't end up with him in the end. I mean, Billy is sweet, and it is cute seeing them together, but HELLO VERNON WAS THERE THE WHOLE TIME. Yeah, definitely onboard that ship! ;)

Aww, Liesel and Max. Yes. Give them some time and I wholeheartedly approve. <3 <3 <3

Rory and Jess! For the most part, yes, but also Jess annoys me sometimes and he needs a good spanking on occasion. :P Rory can handle him well and I appreciate that, haha. But like, the sass of those two combined is enough for me to support this shipping. ;) I really DO wish they'd ended up together!!

I love the idea of she and Poe. ;D (I know, isn't the music video awesome?? haha)
