{2019 in Review} Top Ten New-to-Me Movies

Image
Let the wrap-ups begin! #10.   The Lion King (2019) While there were definitely some lackluster elements to this remake, the visuals were gorgeous and it's worth the watch for Timon & Pumbaa alone. #9.   Unicorn Store (2017) Doesn't this just give you safe, happy, snuggly feelings?? *SPOILERS!* Personally, I think the movie could have been more compelling as a unique coming-of-age story if Samuel L. Jackson's character had turned out to be a con-man.  I think that would have made it more cohesive and less jarring than the magical realism direction it ended up taking.  Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.  The colors are very happy, and I really liked the humor.  #8.   The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1996) It feels like I don't find that many genuinely new-to-me period dramas, so I was happy to discover this one.  I thought it a good adaptation of the book.  It portrayed the domestic ab...

Songs that are way too epic to belong in animated movies.

*EDIT*   I am aware of the controversy surrounding Disney's Pocahontas .  I have added a caveat to my review of the movie, but in brief:  I still have affection for this movie, but I recognize that I may not have a right to that affection, if that makes sense.  Since there seems to be some difference of opinion among Indigenous Americans as regards this movie, I am keeping my references to/reviews of this film public, at this time.  However, I recognize the ongoing need to educate myself and keep listening to the Indigenous American point of view on this issue.  // SUNG // "Savages" | Pocahontas The best is the second part, which starts around 2:54 in this video.  It's such a chilling representation of racism, misunderstanding, fear, and the mob mentality that can come from all of that.  When Pocahontas joins the chorus, it's amazing. "The Bells of Notre Dame" | The Hunchback of Notre Dame Such an epic and chilling opening to t...

Pocahontas {1995}

*EDIT*   I now understand that this movie has been harmful to members of the Indigenous American community.  I had always thought of this movie as a gorgeous exploration of race relations and racism, and I'd always loved it because of the animation and the music.  That is still why I enjoy it.  Nevertheless, I understand that I have the luxury of interpreting the movie in that way since I am not a member of the community that could be/has been impacted by this film and therefore cannot have any concept of its potential negative effects. The discussion on this movie appears to be ongoing and multi-faceted, with Indigenous Americans on various sides of the issue.  That being the case, I am choosing to keep this review public (for now, at least).  However, that said, I never want to be endorsing or enjoying something that is inherently racist, and I will continue to try to educate myself on Indigenous Americans' perspectives.  For a good introduction...

The Disney Princess Book Tag

Image
Hamlette did this tag awhile back, and I decided to do it because it was simply too fun to pass by. :D  Hamlette apparently snatched it (and the picture below) from Rissi over at  Finding Wonderland , who apparently got it from yet another blogger, so . . . Anyway, here are my answers. ;)  (I used Hamlette's idea of pairing the princess with my book answer for each picture.) (I think credit for this image goes to Rissi?) 1. Snow White - Name your favorite classic If I'm interpreting "classic" as the old classics, like pre-20th century, than Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. :)  (And it's also just one of my favorites, period. ;)) 2. Cinderella - Name a book that kept you reading well past your bedtime There have been several!  But more recently, Dawn's Early Light by Elswyth Thane.  You can read my Goodreads review  here ! 3. Aurora - Name your favorite classic romance *freezes up*  Yikes.  Classic romance ...

The Animation Tag

Image
The lovely Ruth over at  Amongst Spring Blossoms tagged me back in October!  Thanks so much, Ruth!  I haven't done a tag in a while, and a tag about animated movies is even more welcome. :)  Everyone, be sure to check out Rachel's blog -- it's fantastic!! <3 Okay, here we go. *cracks knuckles*  (Since the title just says "The Animation Tag," I'm including all sorts of animated movies, not just Disney.) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 1. Who's your favourite animated heroine? Yikes, that's asking quite a bit.  Pocahontas, Esmeralda, Anna, Elsa, Rapunzel, Jane, ALL OF THEM??!!  *gasp*  Oh, and Jenna from Balto .  The last time I watched it, I was more than a little concerned that I was low-key falling a little bit in love with a female dog. 2. Who's your favourite animated hero? You're killin' me, Smalls!  Quasimodo, Aiden (from Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus , don't judge), Dmitri, Prince Eric (which surprises me), Flynn, Shang (...
