Tolkien Blog Party || Tag

Hello again, and a very happy birthday to Bilbo and Frodo. *cheers*

I'm here to answer this year's Tolkien-y questions, as posed by the magical Istar herself, Hamlette.  (Who, in case you missed it, is hosting a wondrous giveaway in honor of the week's celebrations!)

I'd also like to state, for the record, that these aesthetic collages (same line as last year's tag answers) make me feel truly indescribable things and I love them dearly.

1. What Tolkien character do you think you're the most like?

Longish answer for this one, and to be clear, I'm not claiming that all of these traits are good or healthy ones.

To start with, I'd wager that I'm a mix of Faramir, Bilbo, and Frodo:

  • Faramir's general personality & set of core social and moral values.  [See also:  this post.]
  • Bilbo's contentment with home & hearth, and his disinterest in adventures, combined with the occasional nebulous, heart-throbbing pull that he feels of "something Beyond".
  • Frodo's hesitancy & anxiety undergirded by an unshakable sense of duty.  [Also the way he simultaneously relies on the people closest to him and is often frustrated by the feeling that they're not cooperating or that he is being more responsible than they are.]

I also see bits of Galadriel and Gandalf in me, if I may be so bold — not the "unparalleled power & majesty & wisdom" parts, obviously, but some other aspects of their characters.

Like, in Galadriel's case, I relate to her detached, observer perspective on the world and human relations.  I often feel like I'm perched atop some vantage point, surveying everything going on below as if it isn't necessarily happening to or around me, but just before me.

I'm always moralizing, like Gandalf; but unlike him, I'm not always actively sharing those moralistic ramblings with others, or attempting to corral them into epic schemes.

2. What Tolkien character do you wish you were more like?

I'd actually like to be more like all five of the characters mentioned above.  I see some similarities, as I said, but they all have admirable traits that I do not.

3. What would your dream home in Middle-earth be like?

I wrestle with this all the time.  I'm utterly enamored of Rivendell, but Ithilien has always been the location that evokes a sense of complete belonging in me.  It combines some of the best elements of each of my other favorite places, and I think I would be most suited to a simple, happy home there.  (With semi-regular visits to the Last Homely House and the Shire, of course.)

More specifically, I would absolutely love a low-slung stone building tucked away in the woods, with small clearings and little streams nearby, and one or two of my most-beloved people.

(Credit to Heidi for her gorgeously detailed answer, which inspired me to elaborate on my own!)

4. You get to make a movie of the story of Beren and Luthien! Who do you cast as the leads?

Ooh, I love this idea!  I actually came up with too many possibilities to choose just one, so here are three different pairings that I could see being particularly epic.

Sean Maguire / Q'orianka Kilcher

Aldis Hodge / Sarah Gadon

Chris Hemsworth / Lucy Griffiths

What say you?  I'd personally be delighted to watch a film adaptation with any of these couples.

5. Have you ever marathoned the LOTR or Hobbit movies?

You bet your Old Toby I have.  Multiple times, in fact.  My family used to marathon LotR every year, and I even instigated a marathon with my own friend group once.  It happens less often now, but I suspect that I may have one this year.

6. Do you have a favorite song or track from the movie soundtracks by Howard Shore?

This one includes the instrumental motif I love best, as well as my favorite lyrical song, "In Dreams".

7. Which of Tolkien's characters would you like to be best friends with?

LITERALLY ALL OF THE GOOD ONES.  (Except maybe some of the dwarves.  Some of them tend to annoy me and I have a feeling we'd Clash. 😛)

But like.  Can you imagine being part of the huge interconnected friend group of all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit people?  The happiness?  The coziness?!  The sense of home and belonging?!

8. Who of the people in your real life would you want in your company if you had to take the ring to Mordor?

Probably my immediate family members, since we're all used to each other and able to be as direct and no-frills in our communication as we would need to be on a quest like that.  (If that makes sense.)

Also, maybe, a select friend or two.

9. Have you read any of Tolkien's non-Middle-earth works?

I've read Roverandum, Farmer Giles of Ham, and Smith of Wootton Major.  I can't recall whether I actually read Leaf by Niggle or only learned a lot about it in Craig Bernthal's literary analysis Tolkien's Sacramental Vision.  (Highly recommend that book for fans of Tolkien, by the way!)

10. Is there a book by Tolkien you haven't read yet, but want to?

I don't think so, actually.  I love Middle-earth, but I have to be in the right mood to read the man's actual writing, and I don't really have an interest in any more of it at the moment. 😬  Although I did enjoy Farmer Giles of Ham and Smith of Wootton Major.

That's it, folks!
Be sure to check out Hamlette's posts (links at the beginning of the post) so you don't miss out on all the Middle-earth goodies!

  1. I also definitely relate to the way Frodo simultaneously depends on his friends, and also feels like they're not being responsible enough. XD

I LOVE your aesthetic-y collages! I never have the patience to actually MAKE things like that, but I definitely APPRECIATE them.

Ahhh being part of the interconnected friend group would be amazing. <3 I'm realizing that in my answer for who I would want to be friends with, I just...assume that I would also be friends with everyone else. XD Perhaps I should go note that before publishing the post.

    1. Right? *facepalm* It's . . . a problem . . . xD

Aren't they gorgeous?!?! They're made by this incredibly talented Tumblr creator, and it's almost enough to make me want to get a Tumblr account just so I can dive head-first into all the aesthetic beauty!! Luckily, though, some benevolent soul also put them on Pinterest, so I can enjoy them "second-hand," as it were. :D I know, I always WANT to make things that aesthetically pleasing, but I don't often do it.

Yes! Haha, I'm assuming everyone else also takes it as a matter of course that the person they chose wouldn't be the ONLY character they befriended . . . I'm just indecisive so I wanted to "cheat" and say all of them, haha.

  2. Oooh, I do love all your answers...

(and awwww.... thank you for the link, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! <3 :))

I don't think I've ever actually seen Chris Hemsworth in anything (yeah, I know they're very famous, just still have not gotten around to any of them), but the picture you chose actually does look a lot like the sketch I found, so I could see that.

YES on #7! I had the same dilemma and started listing names out and it was just getting ridiculous. ;X You came up with a very gracious, appropriately wide sweeping answer. ;D :D

I actually agree on #10. I just don't want to burst the bubble. And I think Tolkien himself would be understanding of that, because in LOTR the whole idea was creating an epic that tons and tons of people could relate to, without being dryly tied down to one era in time or boxed into one interpretation etc. Short answer, meaning, he wanted a work of fiction, deep story to set the imagination afire.

At the same time, especially with his high view of the Eucharist, the entire thing is rich and spilling over with symbolism. I've been delving into a lot of his thought process in the last week while working on my next post and, of course, ended up with enough material for about three posts. xD Life wise I don't think I can pull them together this week (plus it's a good idea to let stuff keep percolating during the read along), but I'm compiling notes for a full length character sketch of Eowyn and also a look at mortality/immortality in Middle Earth (ready for next year's party?! :)). As such, definitely need to add Tolkien's Sacramental Vision to my reading pile. Thank you!

    1. Thank you!

      (*beams* But of course! <3)

Haha, I totally get the "familiarity with an actor due to the celebrity but not due to actually having ever watched anything they've done" thing. Glad you could see him as Beren, too!

Exactly. I saw the stress of the decision coming and decided to very neatly side-step it altogether, haha. xD

*slow nods* Yep, yep. With Tolkien . . . I've realized that while I love the story and the story-world he created -- I don't absolutely adore everything about his writing. There are parts, of course, that I do, deeply and forever! But I've been learning lately that with both the books and the movies, while they mean a lot to me and I always need them to come back to on a regular basis . . . they're not necessarily ones that I'm going to unreservedly love experiencing over and over and over again, multiple times a year. But anyway. I have a lot of different musings on that that are still too scattered to share publicly. Haha.

The symbolism IS rich, and I would definitelyyyyyyyyy recommend Tolkien's Sacramental Vision! It's a fascinating exploration of the Catholic meaning woven deep into the story.

(Alsoooo, YES, I can't wait to read all your Tolkien-y posts. :D)

  3. Goodness! LOVED your answers. And could I please steal the idea of Chris Hemsworth/Lucy Griffiths for my answering of the tag on my blog?? I was having trouble thinking of the perfect pairing and I think you found it. :D

  4. Yes, yes! From what I know of Galadriel, you do remind me of Galadriel--a quiet and serene observer, as it were. <3

O-kay, you know what, if they make a movie about Beren & Luthien starring Aldis Hodge, I WILL WATCH IT and "you may lay to that." xD Never mind not being a Tolkienite, I will assuredly watch it. :D

YOU AND I BOTH, my friend. You and I both would watch Aldis Hodge in a Tolkien movie. ;-P

  5. Lucy Griffiths, yesss!!! I hardly ever see her name anymore but she was great in Robin Hood. I hope she does more costume dramas in the future. :)

    1. Earned my undying loyalty in Robin Hood, is what Lucy Griffiths did. ;D I hope she does, too! I'd love to see her in more.

  6. Ohh, I thought of Chris Hemsworth too, haha! Great pairings for all three tho!

Aww, now the more that I think of it, being friends with all the Tolkien characters does sound so fun and homely and comforting! Do you ever stop to think (I do sometimes) of how your friends groups/circles would look like in a story? Or like, the LOTR characters, for eg - their friendship... it's not necessarily BETTER than the ones that WE have in our lives, just different! It kind of romanticizes reality a little, haha. I just love all my friends so. <3

    1. Great minds, great minds. ;) Thanks!

Right?! Ooh, such a fun idea! I don't know that I've ever consciously thought of my friend group in a story, but on the other hand I do sometimes think about my friend group in a collective, story-like sense. If that makes any sense at all?? Like, what would our friend group look like if we WERE in a story?

Which, on second thought, is pretty much exactly what you were asking. *facepalm*

  7. You can corral me into an epic scheme any time ;-) If the theater here ever shows all 3 LOTRs again, I shall corral YOU into an epic scheme!

I actually considered Chris Hemsworth for Beren, but I feel like I just use him for so many ideal casting answers (or maybe just put him in everything in my head?) that I decided not to. I dig that you did three pairings! I finally just went around trying to find a good Luthien and then picked someone who I knew would pair well with her.

    1. Dawwwwwww. ;) If your theater ever shows all 3 LOTR shows again, I shall show up to the corral with spurs on, as it were. Make no bones about THAT.

Haha, I definitely feel that, too. I definitely tend to think of Aldis, Lucy, and Chris in general if I'm trying to think of casting. xD Lol.

Comments make my day. Seriously. I'd be so happy if you commented. :)

I've gotten really bad about replying in a timely manner, but it's always my intention to do so eventually. (Even though it doesn't always happen. ;))
