Stories That Feel Like Home to Me

I'M BACK, JACK!

*scoops all of you up into a ginormous cuddle-party*  Co-op has ended, my last choir concert is tonight, my last voice lesson is Wednesday, and now I only have history, math and SAT prep left to do over the holidays [one can't have everything].

I'M SO EXCITED TO BE BACK FOR A LITTLE WHILE AT LEAST GUYYYYYYYYSS.

[Of course, we must be realistic and understand that historically, I have not always been a paragon of fidelity when it comes to following through on blogging promises.  But we can still hope.]

Now, now that we've gotten the reunion out of the way, the post.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I think we all have them.  Most of them were probably originally introduced to us in our childhoods.  Those stories that elicit a very distinctive emotion in us -- a tugging, a pulling, a yearning for home.  Those stories that shaped many childish ideals that are still with us through adolescence and adulthood.  Those stories that "clicked" with us, that made sense of something confusing, perhaps, or that simply hugged you and made you feel secure.  Those stories that generated -- and still generate -- a strong and subtle and often nostalgic and sometimes bittersweet and, above all, safe feeling.  A feeling of belonging.  Do you know what I mean?  It's hard for me to capture in words, but it's fairly easy to identify.

I love those stories.  Here are some of mine :)  [Beware:  there are a lot of "feels" and hashtags in this post.  And it's long.  And some of the choices make sense and some of them don't; it's certainly not a cohesive compilation.  Just thought you should know.]

~ Winnie-the-Pooh ~

Can I get an amen from all the single ladies people who are still instantly transported back to countless innocent, beautiful, golden afternoons in The Hundred Acre Wood??  These stories bring out so many different emotions:  joy, whimsy, bittersweetness, safety, etc.  BUT CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO COPE WITH THE ENDING OF THE LAST BOOK?  "But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest, a little boy and his Bear will always be playing."  GAHHH.

[Also, fun fact:  I just scrolled through my Disney board on Pinterest and thoroughly feelsed myself out.  Well done, self.]

Pride and Prejudice ~

Strangely enough, given my indecision regarding my feelings on it.  The '95 series was probably my earliest exposure to period drama, it was watched a lot, and it makes me feel happy and satisfied when watching it.  It's like visiting old friends to watch a beloved period drama, as my mother and I say :)

~ Frozen ~

I know, I KNOW.  I'm being that person.  This is probably one of the only relatively recent discoveries that makes me feel like home.  Despite all the hype it's gotten, both negatively and positively, I actually really love this movie.  Like, it's legitimately a really good movie, in my opinion :P  It's cosy.  And it's got good lessons and all that jazz.  And stellar animation.  And cute characters.  And...

~ Robin Hood ~

The Disney movie, let me clarify!  BBC RH is one of my favorite things ever, as most of you know, but of all the things I could say it makes me feel, safe and home aren't them.  But the Disney version, on the other hand…yes.  That one is one of the many movies that made up my childhood, and it has a special place, dontcha know :)  Rainy days always make me think of the montage of rainy Nottingham and the jail and everything.

 ~ Little Women ~

I suppose the movie feels like home a little more than the book, but regardless, I love the March family. And I love Laurie, and Professor Bhaer, and Mr. Laurence, and Aunt Josephine, and just FEEL ALL THE FEELINGS.

~ Redwall ~

OH MY FLIPPIN' GOODNESS #CHILDHOOD #SOCHILDHOOD

This series is so obscure and it needs to be experienced by more people.  Honestly, I'm tempted to weep for your infancy if you never had the privilege of listen to this superb series "narrated by the author and others."

~ Peter Pan ~

To die would be an awfully big adventure…just #feels.

~ The Apple Dumpling Gang ~

As I said, some of these make sense and some of them don't, obviously.  Here I am mixing Disney and obscure series with period dramas and offbeat Westerns.  But isn't that sort of a picture of childhood?  It doesn't always make sense what clicks and what doesn't ;)

~ The Swan Princess ~

The very opening bars of this movie's main theme, along with the little animated intro that accompanies it, gets me every time.  I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND I DON'T CARE THAT IT'S CHEESY.  IT'S BEAUTIFUL AND FUNNY AND BAE.

Anne of Green Gables

It's funny, I rarely consciously think of AoGG as a favorite story of mine, and I'm not sure that I could quite say that it is [on the other hand, though…], but neither is P&P.  Both of them are still happy stories for me -- both of them still make me feel secure and satisfied and settled.  Especially Anne.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY FEELINGS IN THIS POST.

~ The Chronicles of Narnia ~

Narnia…Narnia…how the whole concept of this story tugs at the ol' heartstrings!  I was listening to an audio version of The Horse and His Boy for the umpteenth time the other day, and…let's just say that this is a story that everyone should at least be exposed to, I think.  BECAUSE IT'S STINKING AMAZING.  It evokes so many images and feelings and memories and ideas…silver and gold and streams and woods and mountains and snow and a great Lion and four children and then several others and b.e.a.u.t.y.

~ Hank the Cowdog

This is another of those series about animals that I listened to all the time as a kid with two of my brothers. I can't really say anything more than that about it, because if you haven't grown up with it, you'll probably be very confused as to why it's on this list.

~ The Lord of the Rings ~

Last of this post but certainly not least ;)  This feels like a different home to me.  I don't know if I've mentioned it (heh), but LotR is kind of the Story to End All Stories to me.  It's on a level all its own, a plane above every other story I've ever experienced.  (Which, as you can imagine, is saying a lot.)  I don't know if I would call it my favorite story (at least, not my favorite in terms of how often I pick it up to watch it or read it), but I would certainly call it my ultimate story.  It always seems to be there, subconsciously influencing my judgment of most other stories (usually positively!).  It seems almost spiritual, in a way -- not surprising, given how much Tolkien's faith influenced his writing.  Watching or reading the end of the trilogy often makes me think of going home to Heaven.  Seriously, it does.  I understand that some of you don't care for LotR (in fact, this is probably making you giggle a bit!), and that's really okay, I won't be offended if you laugh ;-P  But I have to be honest, and thusly, I had to write that little bit.  Because this story is a very, very, very special one to me.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Okay, I have GOT to get off the computer now.  Bye-bye.

(I'M SO EXCITED FOR BREAK *exclamation marks*)

  1. Welcome BACK!!! *gives you a big hug*. :)

Such a nice, cozy post all round, and what you said about LOTR and Narnia...! Amen, sister! I don't read them much either, but they're just a HUGE part of who I am. :)

    Merry Christmas!

  2. SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU BACK!!! *hugs* Three cheers for Christmas break, eh what, old thing?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . . these are my favorite kinds of stories, I think . . . the ones that feel COZY and nostalgic and homelike. Most of my favorites are that kind of story, I think, actually. I don't know; they just feel RIGHT, dontcha know?

    Winnie-the-Pooh . . . *sniffles* Agghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I miss those days . . .

Pooh is my baby, and Piglet is LITERALLY my spirit animal. Literally. I can't tell you how much they mean to me. I remember one rainy afternoon when me and my dad were the only ones home, and we read Winnie-the-Pooh out loud to each other alllllllllllllllllll afternoon and it was the best day ever. (Gosh, how old was I? Four? Maybe five?)

Frozen!!!!! YAS. This was actually the first Disney movie I ever saw all the way through (I didn't grow up with Disney) so it will always have a very special place in my heart. Plus, it's so GOOD. All that gorgeous ice and snow . . . *sighs*

    NARNIA.

    That is all.

    (Seriously, though, I mean, NARNIA.)

I KNOW. Honestly, all of them seem like my spirit animal, hehe. OH MAH GASH. That story about you and your dad -- HEARTS FOREVER AND EVER. Now I can picture the two of you reading WtP together :)

*gasp* Oh, yes, I remember that!! Yusssss, it's awesome. It's actually kind of a "warm" movie, ha :D

Winnie the Pooh, (AMEN YES AND AMEN), Frozen (it IS comfy and safe!!), Robin Hood (I got that for my 7th birthday and it was SO GOOD), Little Women (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), Peter Pan (<3 <3 <3), Anne of Green Gables (!!! <3 <3 !!!), Narnia (OHHHHHHH!!!), and LOTR (no words! N.O. W.O.R.D.S.)!!!

Ohhh, just YES. (Also, instead of Redwall, I used to LOVE this childhood series called "Brambly Hedge" about little mice. It was the cutest thing EVER.)

    I loved this post. :D

  5. WELCOME BACK (also the new header is FANTASTIC)!!!

HANK THE COWDOG!! Not a lot of people have heard of it (at least the people I know), and needless to say, I was very surprised to find it on your list! Those books were all I read (well, that and the Magic Tree House).

Also, DISNEY'S ROBIN HOOD IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES. The soundtrack is beautiful, Marian and Robin have the sweetest story together, and it's such a good Lazy Saturday kind of movie.

Little Woman was probably the first book I read that was over 20 pages. XD Jo (to this day) is a literary character that I relate most to. She is basically my sister.

Yay for co-op being over (I remember those days...)! We missed you!

"It's such a good Lazy Saturday kind of movie." YES. Exactly that!

My parents and I are re-watching LW for the umpteenth time…I thought of you ;)

Haha! Thanks, I missed you too!

  6. OLIVIAAAAAA! WELCOME BACK YOU DEAR, SWEET, WONDERFUL PERSON! It's so good to read a post from you again. I hadn't realized how much I'd missed your posts until I saw this one on my dashboard. Seeing all the familiar stories on your list made me really happy. :)

That Winnie the Pooh quote, though!! Talk about sentimental, nostalgic feelings.

And ahhh! I LOVE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE! It certainly is a movie full of happy feels. :)

I TOTALLY know what you mean about Lord of the Rings. When I read it, it's almost like reading a beautiful piece of music. And it definitely has a spiritual feel to it. I love the Narnia books, too. They're very strongly linked to my childhood. Also Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Anne of Green Gables, and Apple Dumpling Gang. Love those movies!

This post was just...gahhhh! <3 <3 <3 Thank you for it! And again, I'm SO glad you're back!! :D

"When I read it, it's almost like reading a beautiful piece of music." It IS! There's something very lyrical to the writing.

Thank YOU for the comment, Miss March! It's good to be back ;D

  7. Olivia, welcome baaaack!! :D (I know that's basically how everyone else started their comments, but that's okay)

This list is perfect. You have pretty much everything I grew up with.

Winnie the Pooh was life. The books AND movies.

    Pride and Prejudice...*nods*

Robin Hood(for me, it's not the Disney movie but the Roger Lancelyn Green book) was an important part of my tween life.

Little Women(book and movie) is one the coziest things ever. We watched the movie a few weeks ago and yesss. So home-y.

Reedwall-- girl, you have ALL of the good ones!

Book Peter Pan was another childhood favorite of mine, in fact it's still a favorite of mine. :)

    The Apple Dumpling Gang=goalss.

AoGG YESS YESS YESSS. Those books and movies are really like a small piece of me. <3

Narniaaaa. It's amazing what those movies do to me. And the books are equally epic. Gahhhh.

You described LotR perfectly. It's not always my favorite either, but certainly the "ultimate" story, like you said. Just. So. Perfect.

*applauds* I love this post. :D

    1. Haha, I sure don't mind, Meredith ;) You guys are so sweet.

Oh, yes, the Roger Lancelyn Green book! I haven't read it (that is, I've flipped through it in passing), but I definitely remember it in that it was on our shelf for ages, and my oldest brother really liked it, I think. I'll have to try it sometime!

You know Redwall!! That kind of thrills me :D (What's your favorite book of the series, do you think?)

SAME. I'm glad someone else has the same feelings about LotR not being the "favorite" in the strictest sense of the word, but definitely the ultimate.

      Aww, thank ya :)

    2. Hmmm, my favorite of the three I've read is probably Redwall itself. I'd like to read more of the installments, though. :)

    4. Whoops. Just saw this. Okay, the other two I've read are Mattimeo and Mossflower. Mattimeo wasn't my favorite, but Basil Stag Hare made it worth reading. :D

    5. I feel you, girl -- Mattimeo doesn't have all of the charm of the other ones, and Mossflower kind of depresses me, honestly. :-P

  8. YOU'RE BACK YOU'RE BACK YOU'RE BAAACCKK!! *throws confettit *hugs*
Eeeeek, I've missed you. :) I'm so happy you've returned!

Now the post. (This is such a great post idea!)
I totally relate to movies and books and such that feel "safe" and cozy and happy. :)

My brother and I watched and read a lot of Winnie the Pooh when we were younger, but my knowledge of it is woefully lacking now. I can't wait to revisit it someday with my own (future, hopefully) children. (And if I have no children, I'll revisit it myself. Heh heh)

I feel so happy that when you referenced your mother. I'm now able to picture her and remember how nice she is (tell her I said hi!).

"..of all the things I could say it makes me feel, safe and home aren't them." HAHAHA. Yes. More like...pain. Bitter pain. Oh, the scars I bear.
(And yet I still watch it.)

I'm so happy there are happy Robin Hood versions to enjoy, like Disney's. :)

SAME. I admit I might just love LW the movie maybe a little more than the book...it's at least more familiar. It's just so COZY.

Weep for my infancy, Olivia. :'(

Peter Pan. <3 <3 <3 -cries- (Have you heard "Peter Pan" by Kelsea Ballerini or "Lost Boy" by Ruth B? They're pretty cool.)

The Apple Dumpling Gang can borderline get on my nerves (sometimes), but I suppose I still love it. ;)

The Swan Princess. -guiltily raises hand-

    ANNE. <3

Oh, Narnia. I just today finished re-reading "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" after not touching a Narnia book for years and I must wonder what I've been doing with my life. I NEED to re-read the series...<3

Um. Olivia. There were enough feels in this post. WHY DID YOU INCLUDE LOTR?!?
Just kidding. ;) It wouldn't be a complete post without it. I love EVERYTHING you said about it. So much beauty.

"Oh, the scars I bear." You said it, kid. AND THAT "SATURN" VIDEO YOU SENT ME DIDN'T HELP MATTERS, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. (Hahaha, no, seriously, I AM glad you sent it to me.)

I have wept. The requiem service was held last week :P

I don't know that I have -- I think I've heard at least *a* version of "Lost Boy," but I'm not sure which. PP is so awesome!

Haha, I get that, really, I do. It's a very random movie :D

YAAASSSS. Don't feel guilty! You wear that badge with pride! ;D

Oh, Robin Hood BBC. Although I am a veeeeeery big fan of that series, I must admit that you're right. I doesn't give me a... home feeling. Little Women does, but not Robin Hood BBC. RH BBC is so good. And thos pictures of Robin and Marian on the Five Favourite Couples Tag were beautiful and sooooooo sad! :'(

Robin Hood!! Loved that move so much as a kid.
Haha, aww the Apple Dumpling Game! Used to own the sequel and watched it sooo many times.

    Ahem.

This post!!!! Saw so many things I love here! THE FEELS! *clutches heart dramatically*

Like Little Women! The book basically encapsulates that feeling you were talking about, but I love the 1994 movie as well.

And Pride and Prejudice! Except I adore the 2005 one...

And the Narnia movies (the first two, anyway... Ahem. Don't get me started...)! Just got the first movie for Christmas and it. Is. So. Good!

And Lord of the Rings!!! LORD OF THE RINGS IS MY HEART, BASICALLY. And that Eowyn/Elmer gif is just ASDFGJKKKJHHGFDDS!!!! SO ADORABLE AND SAD!!! Is it an extended scene? I have the extended editions of the first two, but, ALAS, not the third. :(

The Apple Dumpling Gang... When I was veeeeeerry little, I was obsessed with it (and Star Wars and The Lord pog the Rings which I had never seen, but my older siblings talked about aaaaaaaaalll the time, so I knew all the things), but now I can't remember it at all????

I've never seen Frozen, but I feel the same way about Tangled. Cozy is the perfect word. :)

      I KNOW. SAME.

Hurrah for LW! (I may or may not have left a ranting comment about it on your blog just now . . .)

Well, the 2005 version of P&P is good! I like both versions, too :) (Probably the '95 a little better, but still.)

Hehe . . . heh . . . yes. I understand. ;) Though I do actually like all of them, flaws and all. But GAAAAAHHHH THE FIRST ONE THOUGH <3 <3 <3

ASJHGAJSKGLASJHDGLA I KNOW THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! OH MY, you really need to get the extended version of the third -- in my opinion, it's the one that really needed the extended version. YES YES YES. That Eomer/Eowyn gif is indeed from an extended scene and IT'S JUST TOO EPIC AND FEELSY AND PAINFUL I CAN'T. He finds her on the field after the Battle of Pelennor :'( You should google that scene, and also the FARAMIR AND EOWYN SCENE IN THE HOUSES OF HEALING BECAUSE REASONS. It's like one of the most perfect scenes in the whole trilogy, and it's about 45 seconds long.

I know how you feel! I had those movies that my older sibs talked about all the time :D

YAAAASSS, both Frozen and Tangled are precious <3

Awww, thank you so much! Ditto! *tackle-hugs again*

    2. Really??? Awwww. I'm touched! :)

Okay, so I have SEEN the Extended third??? I JUST DON'T OWN IT, UNFORTUNATELY, WHICH MAKES ME A SAD BEAN. However, I didn't remember that moment... It's been awhile (too long!!!) so the only extended scene I really remember is The Tongue of Suron losing his head...

Also forgot to mention two things the first time (that always happens wen I want to mention EVERYTHING...): Disney's Robin Hood!!! I was legitimately OBSESSED with it as a child!!!

Lastly (I promise I'll shut up soon...), YOUR HEADER IS SO GOREOUS!!!

YES YES YES. Weren't we all. It's such a good movie. :D
