All the 'Best Picture' Oscar Winners I've Seen

I saw this done by Eva over at Coffee, Classics, and Craziness, and I thought it'd be fun to share my own stats. ;)

It Happened One Night (1934)

I wanted to like this so bad, but had some quibbles about how the girl was technically married, even though it was all sort of resolved in the end.

Gone with the Wind (1939)

I'll watch it every once in a while, but not all the way through. Nor with a great deal of affection. ;-P

Casablanca (1943)

It's not that I disliked this one, it's just that I didn't really like it, either. (But that last "Here's looking at you, kid" did Hit Me.)

An American in Paris (1951)

I'm preeeetty sure I watched all of this ─ there's a chance I only watched a part of it ─ but either way, I was not very impressed, I'm sorry to say. :-P

My Fair Lady (1964)

ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES. ♥ Higgins and Eliza and all their coterie are pure gold. I hope I never tire of them.

The Sound of Music (1965)

The Sound of Music still from the film

'Tis a family tradition to watch this on New Year's Eve. (I don't know how or why this started, but I'm sure glad it did.) It's a fabulous movie. Julie Andrews is a queen, Christopher Plummer is a king, all the kids are over-acted but super adorable, and the music is nostalgic and fun to sing along to. (And Baroness Schraeder and Uncle Max are awesome, too.)

Rocky (1976)

Adrian (Talia Shire) just wants to have a nice quiet Thanksgiving, but then brother Paulie (Burt You... - United Artists

Again, I'm pretty certain I've seen this in its entirety, but possibly it was only ever some snippets. Either way, good movie. Not really my jam, but I'm not about to depreciate that soundtrack or those running montages. I'm not a monster or anything.

Chariots of Fire (1981)

MV5BMTYxMzU2OTM1NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzI0MjkwNw@@._V1_SX1501_CR0,0,1501,999_AL_

This one's a little slow, but I think I liked it the last time I watched it. I like how many young period drama faces there are in it.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Aragorn and Arwen from Return of the King

WELL. What can one say. ;) (Except that it's brilliant and sort of life-changing.)

The King's Speech (2010)

The King's Speech

This is a most excellent movie. Not one I could watch over and over, but a solid occasional go-to. A stellar piece of period drama.

Spotlight (2015)

Co-writer/director Tom McCarthy's drama features one of the more formidable ensembles in recent memory, led by Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, Stanley Tucci, Brian d'Arcy James, John Slattery and Billy Crudup.

I think this is such a good movie. I've watched it several times, and I really like it. It's heavy, but for some reason it doesn't really feel heavy to me. I don't know why. Anyway, it's excellently written and acted. And it's got this one brief, simple scene that's one of the best summations of 'church hurt' I've ever seen or heard.

Thoughts? Feelings?

  1. I haven't seen It Happened One Night, Rocky, or Spotlight, but I've seen all the rest that you listed! Ah, My Fair Lady, Chariots of Fire and The King's Speech are some of my favorites. <3 Yeah, An American in Paris just goes on, and on, so you can definitely get tired of it. Fun post! I might do this too, sometime. :)

Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I tagged you. No pressure, only do it if you want to!

    1. You might quite like all three of those! (I know Spotlight has content and I think Rocky might, too, though, just fyi.) Haha, yeah, AAIP just didn't work so well for me personally. Who knows, maybe I'd like it more if I watched it again.

Oh, yes, thank you! I've been meaning to comment on that. Hopefully soon. ;)

  2. THANK you for recognizing the awesomeness of Baroness Schraeder!!! She gets too much hate.

    Loved this post.

    1. YES!! She really does. She's not a terrible person, she's just not an outstandingly wonderful one. And she's a fabulous character.

      Thanks!

  3. Oh! I like this post. This was very fun to read. I've seen all these movies except for Gone with the Wind, An American in Paris, and Spotlight, and I pretty much agree with your feelings on all of them except I think I probably enjoy Rocky more than you do, and My Fair Lady less. ;) It's been a while since I've seen My Fair Lady, but I went to see a live play of it recently (only stayed for the first half because of having to get up early for work the next day), and I wasn't sure I liked it too much. At any rate, I understood a bit more why my mom never liked that movie, heehee. ;)

Anyhow, this was great! Thanks for a fun post. :)

    1. Yay! :D

Haha, neat! Yes, probably. ;-P Ooh, I didn't know you'd seen/liked Rocky! It's been a while since I've seen any of it. But yeah, it's a good movie. Heehee, I'm resigned. I'm doomed to like My Fair Lady more than you and Natalie. It's okay. ;D

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. :)

  5. I really didn't get the hype with Casablanca the first time around, but it grew on me a lot! Really need to see 'It happened one night' and Rocky!

    1. Yeah. I'd be interested to see how I'd feel with a second viewing.

Ooh, yes, you do! You'd probably really like them both.

  6. Ooooh. I really need to watch Spotlight now.

    "I'm not a monster or anything"--LOL! ;-)

    1. I feel like you'd find Spotlight fascinating. It's unapologetic in its condemnation, but you also don't get the feeling that it's trying to make any sweeping statements about Catholicism as a religion or Catholics as a group, which I appreciate. (I mean, characters do speculate about whether the enabling and protective behavior comes "from the top down," but still.)

The scene I mentioned is so good, especially. Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams are awesome.

      Heehee. ;D

Comments make my day. Seriously. I'd be so happy if you commented. :)

I've gotten really bad about replying in a timely manner, but it's always my intention to do so eventually. (Even though it doesn't always happen. ;))
