15 Reasons Why 'The Lord of the Beans' Is a Work of Comedic Genius

I love Lord of the Rings, which basically everybody knows; and I also love parodies, which everyone may not know.  So when I watched the Veggie Tales spoof of LotR (titled Lord of the Beans) for the first time a few years ago, I loved it instantly (and I'm not even a real Veggie Tales fan).

Today I'm sharing some of the reasons I think it's absolutely hilarious, and basically, that's just going to mean quoting some of the best lines + a few of the best parody elements.  Hope you enjoy, and that it makes you want to try this if you've never seen it! :)

Here's a rundown of the Veggie Tales characters and their LotR doppelgangers, to hopefully make things a bit clearer (the names are pretty self-explanatory, but still):

Todo = Frodo
Randalf = Gandalf
Bilboy = Bilbo
Ear-o-Corn = Aragorn
Leg-o-Lamb = Legolas
Grumpy = Gimli AND Boromir
Ahem = Gollum

✾  ✾  ✾  ✾  ✾

- how Grumpy's first words are, "Oi, could we have parked any farther away?!" because they're trying to capture both Gimli and Boromir

- Ear-o-Corn moodily swiping the blossoms off flowers as they walk for no reason whatsoever other than to reiterate his extreme Moodiness™

- "Dear flobbits!  Today is my twelfety-twoth birthday!  122 years is too short a time to live among such fine folk.  I'm twice as tall as half of you and half as short as twice of you!"

- Randalf: "And what's this?  An espresso maker?"
Bilboy: "Oh, you really must try it--I tell you, it makes tea taste like bathwater!"

- the shots of Randalf studying the bean intently while Shore-esque music plays, plus this whole bit:  "Why would I want a bean?"
*dramatic pause*
*Randolf starts singing*
"This beeeaaaaannn . . . is not an ordinary beaaaaaan.  This beEEEAaan . . . " / that whole song ("there was aNOther bean . . . AnOTHer bean . . . a fifth bean . . . ")

- Todo: "It says . . . 'If you can read this, you're too close.'"
Randalf:  "Other side."

- "'It'll be fun,' he says; 'fresh air,' he says; 'you'll get out of the mines,' he says . . . "

- "Ya gOtTa dReSs FoR tHe WEATHER!"

-  "You're no elf!  You're an elvish impersonator!  You sicken me, deceitful one! . . . Have at thee!  My bow shall sing with your pompadour!"

Plus "Silly Songs with Elves" in general; that whole interpretation of Arwen and Elvish

- Leg-o-Lamb: "It said all that?"
Randalf:  "It's a highly efficient tongue.  You can fit a whole book on a napkin."

- SPORKS ("they are his utensils, and they do his bidding")

- Leg-o-Lamb: "The Blue Gate!"
Ear-o-Corn: "Why do they call it 'blue,' you ask?  Perhaps for the sorrow that blankets that land beyond.  Perhaps for the sadness of those who toil on this cursed wall.  PeRhaPs for the RIVER OF TEARS that FLOWS FROM THE--"
Randalf: "Ahem." *indicates door that is literally blue*
Ear-o-Corn: ". . . Or that."

Plus the fact that a little later, this happens:

Randalf:  "The Red Gate."
Ear-o-Corn:  "It's yellow."
R:  "Hm?  Oh, they say it was named for the color of the sunset on the day they hung those doors.  Don't be so literal!"

- the spoof on the eagles ("'Get your own ride!'")

- how they pay homage to Gimli's line about exercising with this one from Grumpy:  "You know, they--they say you should balance out your aerobic activity with a little weight training.  What say we break and do some squats?!"

- when "the other elf" (he's an amalgam of Sam + Pippin + Merry) saves the gang from the sporks by offering them cookies, and the spork literally says the line:  "We ain't had nothing but maggoty bread for three stinkin' days" and then finishes with, "I'd love a cookie :)".

✾  ✾  ✾  ✾  ✾

That may not have made any sense to anyone, but I felt the need to raise some awareness because I really think this is quite entertaining if, like me, you enjoy both LotR and parodies. ;)

Alright, that's it.  You can go home now. :-P

  5. The way you wrote this had me biting my finger to keep from waking my siblings up at 1 a.m. There was aNOther beaaan. AnOTHer beaaaan. A FIFTH beaaan.

    I've watched this since I was little, even before I read/saw the real thing at age 12. It is HILARIOUS and my older sister and I have so many inside jokes about it... Just...the way they say their lines....it would funny enough even if they weren't actually saying anything funny.

    Also, I knew Ear-o-corn's flower chopping would make it in here😂.

    1. Ack, that makes me unduly happy. xD I had fun playing around with the quotes and trying to convey the inflections.

      Haha! It'd be fun to have inside jokes about this.

      Haha, really?! How did you know?! XD

  10. I grew up on VeggieTales (and as Katherine mentions above, I'd probably understand more jokes now, it would also explain why my parents enjoyed them too), and then LoTR was really our family's first main foray into contemporary live action films. We got the extended editions and watched the making of . . . which Lord of the Beans also spoofs, there is a version with all the characters commentating like all the actors do in the extra scenes.

    We just had a Lord of the Rings marathon, surely we kept Lord of the Beans, I need to rewatch.

    1. How cool that those two coincided! Oh my goodness, did they really?! That's awesome. I should try to track that down sometime. Or it might actually be on the DVD copy I have; I should look! Thanks for mentioning it. ;)

      Ooh, Lord of the Rings marathons are a must. (But they're so emotionally affecting! For me, at least.) You should definitely rewatch it!

  11. Haha, I really enjoy this one from VeggieTales! Although I've never actually seen LoTR, it's still hilarious to me. "YOU GOTTA DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!!!!" XD

    I recently watched VeggieTales' parody of The Wizard of Oz again, "The Wizard of Ha's". That's also great. XD Have you seen that one?

    1. Ahhh, see?! It's funny enough that you don't even need to have seen the real thing. :D Haha!! Love that part.

      Ooh, I haven't seen that one, no; but it sounds promising! I should look into it. ;)

  16. I swung by to share how much I love your Christmas theme (it's very nice, I love it), but then I saw this post and was reminded--to my horror--that I never commented on it when the email notice came. I am here to fix that, because HOLY MOLY.
    Veggie Tales was my childhood, and Lord of the Beans holds a special place in my heart. I died watching it, it was just amazing--they did such a good job! Absolute comedic genius, I must agree with you. My family are film fanatics, and we live to quote--the "I'd love a cookie" scene is a common quote we toss back and forth.
    Thank you for the post and the nostalgia it inspired! I used to own it on DVD... I should go hunt that down, its about time for a rewatch... ;)

    1. Awww, thank you so much! Both for the compliment about the Christmas theme and the post. I was really happy with how the winter theme turned out, so I'm glad you like it too. :)

      And the movie! Yes, totally genius. Ahhh, my family and I quote a lot, too. Sadly, none of my family loves this movie as I do . . . ah, well. ;) Haha! "I'd love a cookie." xD

      You're most welcome! You should indeed. ;)
