Movies: Months in Review {February/March 2019}

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Personally, I liked this.  My brother had told me that most people hadn't cared for it very much, but I thought it was actually quite good.  It had a great balance of humor ("What'd you see?"  "Too fast; nothing.") and development.  And Ben Kingsley was awesome. XD

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again (2018)

Ahhhh, Mamma Mia . . . This is basically my relationship with it:

Mamma Mia . . . here I go again

My, my--how can I resist you?

Mamma Mia . . . does it show again

That you're-really-inappropriate-and-I-can't-endorse-you-but-you're-also-so-fun-and-happy-and-have-such-a-great-cast-and-setting-and-music-that-I-kind-of-love-you?

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

This honestly struck me as choppily and confusingly told.  (And I'm sorry, but that villain inception/development was one of the weakest and weirdest I have ever seen.)

I was kind of disappointed, 'cause I felt like I came away having gained pretty much nothing from the movie.  But Tom Holland and Zendaya were both cute, as usual.

The Comancheros (1961)

Again, a pretty strange movie??!  My dad and I were No Impresionado.

The Wedding Planner (2001)

I really liked this!  Lopez and McConaughey were fun together, and it was really nice to find a new sweet, humorous chick-flick that's reasonably clean.  Happiness! :)

Unplanned (2019)

Most of America (on both sides of the issue) could benefit from seeing this, I think.  It's scarring, and it will push those of us who are already pro-life to do more towards combatting abortion.

Now, it's not perfect.  Like many Christian movies, it falls into the trap of vilifying the other side almost completely.  (For instance, Abby's supervisor is portrayed as this cold, heartless, money-grubbing corporate monster.  Which is kind of tired and which I'm kind of over.)  (Although, on the other hand, maybe her supervisor really was like that.  It is a true story, after all.)  It also has some cheesiness, and while some of the humor works, some of it seems forced and typical-Christian-movie-esque.  (Additionally, there are some subtle hints that working mothers are unable to invest as wholly in their motherhood as stay-at-home mothers are, and that bothered me.)

But.  All that to say, again--I would recommend it to most.  You'll probably hate it, which is good.  You'll see a complete ultrasound-guided abortion take place (within the first five minutes of the movie), and the images of a baby being killed in the womb will not leave you after a few hours.  You'll also see the detailed remains of an aborted infant and the process of a chemical (pill-induced) abortion, among other things.

If you are sensitive to blood, I would recommend either not watching it or watching it in the privacy of your home.  Otherwise, please consider going to see it in theaters!  If we as a nation can garner a huge viewing rate in its opening week, maybe it will draw more attention.

Who Am I This Time? (1982)

This was weird and cute and mealy and cringey and enjoyable.

What movies have you been watching lately?

Comments

  1. Of all the superheroes, Spiderman is my favorite, so I watch Homecoming all. The. Time. But, my little sister doesn't like it so I can totally see what you're talking about.

Whoa, my dad and sister were watching The Comancheros last night! The first time I saw it I thought it was pretty weird, too.

I want to see Unplanned, but I haven't had the chance. As soon as I do, I am going to!

    1. Yeah, I was kind of bummed. :-/ But I'm glad it works for you!

Really?? Funny coincidence. What do you think of it now?

It's so good and so traumatic.

  2. MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN JUST MAKES ME SO HAPPY. I know that Donna is going a little crazy with those wild oats, so I don't endorse her actions, BUT THE MUSIC IS SO JOYFUL. I love it. Also all the boys are wonderful, and wow what a fun movie.

    1. I know, right?!?! Both the first and the second are so joyful, as you said. And I know that that's mainly due to Abba's music, but the relationships in the story itself are sweet, too. <3

  3. I loved SpiderMan Homecoming, and so did some of my sisters. My brother, who knows the comics better very much did not. He and my-sister-in-law said it was because they like the Amazing SpiderMan but I thought I liked it better than they did and yet I was resigned by the time I watched Homecoming. I like them both for different things.

I can't even remember if I've seen Iron Man 3 or not. I feel like I did but maybe I'm thinking of two. I barely remember any of the Iron Man movies. Those were some of the first superhero (first Marvel I think), I'd ever seen, and clearly I wasn't inspired to rewatch them.

    1. I had several local friends who liked it, from what I remember! I know what you mean about liking different versions of the same story for different things.

Yeah, the early Thor movies and the early Captain America movies were the first Marvel ones I saw, and I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of stuff from all of those. :-P

  4. I watched Thor: Ragnorak last night and LOVED IT, which was a total and complete surprise.

Comments make my day. Seriously. I'd be so happy if you commented. :)

I've gotten really bad about replying in a timely manner, but it's always my intention to do so eventually. (Even though it doesn't always happen. ;))
