Obscure one-liners from The Princess Bride that need to be assimilated into our vernacular posthaste.

A little over a month ago, I reread William Goldman's The Princess Bride ─ which is basically my favorite thing on planet Earth ─ and since everyone knows the movie but fewer people seem to have read (and enjoyed) the book, I wanted to share, out of context, some of the best one-liners from that magnificent tome.  I think we should all start using these quotes in our everyday conversation whenever possible. ;)

✾ "Madam, feel free to flee!"

✾ "God grant you your quota of smiles."

✾ "I myself am often surprised at life's little quirks."

✾ "Frankly, and I hope you won't be insulted, no."

✾ "I was, do I have to add, disheartened."

✾ "I mean if we even had a wheelbarrow, that would be something."

✾ "You're an enemy of art and I pity your ignorance."

Enjoy! :)

(Also, this is a really funny parody of the movie adaptation.  Have fun.)

  1. "You're an enemy of art and I pity your ignorance." TOTALLY STEALING THAT xD

    1. It's some excellent shade to throw, is it not? ;)

  2. I ... am just so opposed to Princess Bride. I "tried" to read the book, but because I'm contrary started with the introduction. Maybe that helped kill any budding interesting that could possibly have been imagined into existence. I don't know. I think I'm still set against it after despising it when my acquaintance group chose it *twice* for movie nights as a college student. I wasn't even a teenager, and I'm not sure it's been long enough or that I could have changed enough to like it. I thought I try the book because it's less well-known, but yeah. That didn't happen. Maybe I could skim the book?

    1. I get why it's not everyone's thing. I personally adore the book with pretty much my whole soul, but I understand that it doesn't appeal to everybody and that's totally fine.

But yeah, if you want to try it again or skim it, I'd definitely skip all the introductions and prefaces and jump straight to "Chapter One: The Bride".

    2. I'll have to try that next time I attempt the book.

    3. Good plan! (I know his "abridger remarks" in italics throw some people off, too, though I personally think they add indispensably to the book. *shrugs*)

  4. I immediately clicked on this post once I saw "The Princess Bride" in the title, haha. I do quote lines from the movie on a rather consistent basis, but I'm not familiar with the quotes from the book, so this was a fun read! I think my favorite quote from this list is "Frankly, and I hope you won't be insulted, no." I can definitely see myself using that in daily conversation! ;P

    1. Haha! I mean, once you see the movie, you can't just not quote it, am I right? ;) I'm glad you enjoyed this! Ahhh, yes, I really love that one too. :D

  5. I've grown up watching the movie and I adore it, but I recently read the book and I enjoyed it as well!! I don't remember very many lines (I borrowed it from the library), except for the ones I recognized from the movie. :)

  6. Soooooooooooooooo good. I adore the movie, I enjoy the book, and really, his one-liners are unbeatable! I do throw lines from the movie into everyday conversation a lot. Especially, "Life IS pain, Highness. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something."

  8. I was laughing as I read these out of context book quotes. I enjoyed the book version of the movie, but I didn't enjoy his random commentary to the story. The story itself was great though!

Comments make my day. Seriously. I'd be so happy if you commented. :)

I've gotten really bad about replying in a timely manner, but it's always my intention to do so eventually. (Even though it doesn't always happen. ;))
