Cinderella (2015) movie review

As promised, a review of Cinderella:)

This movie was all…warm and fuzzy.  That's really the best phrase I can think of to describe it.  While it wasn't as creative as Maleficent, say, in its expansion of the original animated version, it was sweet and authentic.  I liked that Ella wasn't necessarily "looking" for a Prince Charming, and that it was clearly shown that she was fulfilled and strong without a guy (not to sound like a feminist, but you all know what I mean).

It was also a very "beautiful" movie in that there was a nice golden filter in basically every scene.  It almost got a little old in some parts, but overall it added a magical kind of aura to the film:)

As I've said before, Lily James was my favorite portrayer of Cinderella that I've seen.  Drew Barrymore comes pretty close, but I do, overall, prefer Lily's version.  This Cinderella was sweet, but not (at least in my opinion) ditzy.  She did her best to keep her promise to her mother, and was very brave and gentle.

Richard Madden was a nice Prince (and look, he has a name!).  Kit was a bit…Ella-crazed *ahem*, but, after all, he was dealing with the character of "Prince Charming."  And let's be honest…the original Disney prince has basically no personality.  At all.  So, let's cut him some slack;)  I liked when he was arguing with both his father and Ella, and he'd keep interjecting, "You wouldn't." "I would!"  "You wouldn't."  Or, "I shouldn't."  "You should."  "I shouldn't."  "You should."  =D

Cate Blanchett as the Evil Stepmother…*grin*.  She did a great job as well, providing a very complex and layered stepmother, for whom, at times, I was actually sorry.

The costumes were well suited to the different characters, with the stepsisters' costumes being ridiculous and frankly ugly, while Ella's were sweet and simple.  Oh, and guys, THE BALLGOWN.  Look at this gorgeousness!

*melts*

In short, to echo virtually every review of this movie out there, a sweet, magical movie with great acting, great costuming, and a great message.

'Til next time, people!  Have courage and be kind.

  3. Okay, I think I must see this. :-)

It's funny, I know both the stepsisters from other things where they play sweet, kind girls. ;-P And Lily James, of course, is in Downton Abbey, and she's adorable. I'm also a fan of Cate Blanchett.

I laughed when you mentioned 'Danielle Barrymore'-- you probably know this, but her name's Drew Barrymore, and the character is Danielle. I don't know if you meant to do that or not, but I thought it was cute. :-) You've seen Ever After, then? I used to LOOOOOOVE that movie to bits, and I still like it, though not as rabidly as I used to. Drew Barrymore rather annoys me, though there are other parts of the movie I really like.

    Great review!

    1. Yes! Ah, yes, the Downton characters;)
Hahaha, I didn't even realize I'd done that *facepalm* I knew her name was Drew, just slipped my mind, haha!:) Yes, that's the thing--I still love Ever After, but sometimes Drew Barrymore can get just a little annoying in that movie:-/

  5. I just watched this two days ago, and I wholeheartedly agree with your (and every other) review.

I was amazed how close they kept Ellas character to that from the fairytale without making her bland or ditzy. And the prince was delightfully charming (pun intended) and those eyes!!
I also quite liked the portrayla of the stepmother, she was evil, but they gave her layers and I felt sorry for her more than once.

And don't even get me started on the visual effects, the costumes and the music. LOVED IT!

Yes! And they made you understand part of WHY she was wicked.
Oh. Mah. Garsh. The costumes. Like how did they even...so beautiful!!!

The music was beautiful!!! Isn't it Patrick Doyle? He's amazing...

    2. Yup, it's him! Patrick Doyle is one of my favorite composers. I have a bunch of his scores: Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Thor, and now this.

    3. Mine, too! I haven't heard his Shakespeare scores (and I didn't know he was the one who did Thor) but I LOVE his soundtrack for Disney's Brave. What. Even. And Secondhand Lions and '95 Sense and Sensibility, etc.:)

    4. Oh yeah! I forgot he did Brave. Really great music, though I haven't listened to the soundtrack on its own. Might have to see if the library has it. Ditto Sense & Sensibility.
