A Look at the Wardrobe of…{a Galactic Senator}

I've been in a major Star Wars mood recently.  I don't know why.  But anyway, I have been, and so lately I've been watching YouTube fan videos (especially of Padmé) and looking at pictures and stuff.

I really love Padmé Amidala.  She saves the new movies, for me; the best character (kind of like Han is the best character in the old ones).  She's just really cool to me:)  So I wanted to take a look at her outfits, because they are AMAHZING.  As a queen and later a senator, she's always attired immaculately (well, almost always.  We'll get to that), and she knows how to carry herself.  (Hey, don't be harshing my geeky like of SW! ;D)

I love it when a character has a lot of different outfits, and luckily, Padmé is one of those characters;)  In fact, she has so many that I'm sure I'll miss quite a few of them.  I'm just going to focus on some particular ones that I find particularly awesome or particularly heinous, yes?

Let's begin!

The good

I know this is weird, but I'm actually a little in love with this outfit.  It's wacky and definitely brings in sci-fi elements, but in my opinion something about it, the closer you look, demands respect.  It's a sophisticated kind of weird.  The only thing I think I might have changed is to either remove those bulbous, spotless ladybug things from around the bottom, or make them slightly smaller.  Other than that, though, I admit it.  I love this outfit.

I'll admit, if a crop-top is done tastefully and isn't super high, I think they can be pretty.  This ensemble is sort of a mix of Jasmine-style loungewear, classy styling, and pajamas.  I like it a lot.  It's effortless and elegant, in my opinion.

She wears this in that scene where she has that really cool line:  "So this is how liberty dies--with thunderous applause."  (oooooooooohh)  Anyway, this dress has grown on me.  I'm not completely sold on the hairstyle or the brass choker thing, but the detailing in the gown itself is stunning.  Look at it.  A beautiful color on Natalie Portman, and just regal and dignified and graceful.

Technically, this is just a robe she throws on over her nightgown, but still.  'T'is beautiful.

Yes, this outfit could be just a *ahem* leetle higher in the back, but from the front, it's all good.  The ombre effect is great, the styling is great, everything's great.

Another gorgeous nightdress.  Look at the pearly epaulets!  Look at her hair!  Look at the silky sheen of the fabric!  (Yeah, I'm a bit of a dork when I find a movie wardrobe that I really like.)

This one doesn't look as pretty in this picture, but in the actual scene, it's very flow-y and golden and spring-like.  I'm not sure about those honeycomb buns on either side of her face, though…;)

Her wedding look is stunning.  The end.  (Okay, maybe the scalloping on the veil is a leetle much, but I don't really mind it.)

Yeah, it might not be Natalie Portman's best color, but I actually like it the more I look at it.  And it looks like a serviceable travel dress for her, so that's good.

A very subdued, sweet, contemplative sort of dress.  I like it.

The bad

Eccckkk.  Something about it frankly calls to my mind the word 'dominatrix.'  It's just…odd.

Hehe.  An example of a crop top that didn't really work, at least in my opinion;)  It's not too bad, but it's not too good, either.  (Of course, she was going to be executed in this scene, so I guess it's not really supposed to be glamorous, hehe.)

I actually kind of liked this look in the movie the first time I watched it, but looking back at it after a couple of years…there's just too much going on; a whole lot of hardness and black without much of anything to break it up.  It's a bit too harsh of an outfit for me.  Though I suppose it does rather reflect the mood of the scene in which she wears it.

The dress itself isn't atrocious, but it is a little weird.  And the styling didn't really help matters:-/

The ugly

Um, no.  You have antennae, darling.  It doesn't work.

Again…just no.  The oversized kimono thing, with that headdress, combined with the stark white facial powder the senator had to wear, just isn't very flattering or interesting at all.

Yeah.  That's just frightening.

Anywho, I hope you guys enjoyed this post!  Hope my geekiness wasn't too annoying;-P

  1. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on Padme. Don't like her much... though I suppose in the larger picture she was one of the only okay parts of 1,2, and 3 besides Obi Wan Kenobi. But I agree with you on all of her clothes. I always (for the most part) liked her wardrobe. I especially love the golden one.

  3. Geeky? No way. I LOVE Star Wars. To pieces. The end.
    (December 18th--just sayin' :) )
Although, TBH, I haven't seen the "prequels." I've just heard a lot about them . . . and I think Padme is sooooo beautiful. Did you know Natalie Portman's actually from Israel? I had no idea. Her real name is Neta Lee Herschlag (I think that's how you spell it).

By the way, I was just trying to figure out my Myers-Briggs type, for fun--and it looks like I'm an INFJ. Like you :) It's fun to be a statistical rarity, huh? NOW I know why other people think I'm a little "weird"--there's nothing actually wrong with me, I'm just DIFFERENT from most folks. :)

Hehe, well…as you've probably heard, they aren't exactly…stupendous;-P I mean, they're okay, but…the acting could be improved, let's say;) Padmé IS soooo gorgeous. I think I had heard that, yes! It's so cool, isn't it?

Oooh, yay! *high five* It's definitely fun to be a statistical rarity!:D

  4. Yes. Agree with everything! Although, you left out one dress that I actually like a lot. Not a fan of the hair, though. :P

  5. Bahahah! I haven't seen these movies in so long!
Yeah, a majority of the ones you don't like are my least favorite- I always liked the cut off/white crop top one, mainly because that's when she actually does action stuff- I always thought it was cool how that tiger thing clawed her in the arena.

I always LOVED her yellow spring dress!! And her pink ombre one- those were my favorites :D Ohhhh I vaguely remember the jasmine type thing. But I really like it! I'm with you on the crop top thing. In todays fashion, I'm getting tired of them- I hate it when I go shopping, and see a color I like, then grab it, and it's like half a shirt. :/ grrrrrr. But in fantasy/sci-fi I'm cool with it ;)

  6. P.s, I never noticed when I watched the movie, that with her yellow spring dress, she has colorful tassels wrapped around her arm. I've always loved that look, until I actually had to wear arm tassels for the Star Wars fan film I recently acted in. They were constantly sliding down and I had to keep having someone fix them- You can see some pics here~

    1. Heehee, yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of the white crop top, but it's by no means my least favorite:D

It's so pretty! And the ombre one is just gorgeous. Don't even care;)

Haha! YES! That IS super frustrating. They're better in movies:)

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed the tassels before either. I'm not sure what I think of them, hehe. Oh, wow! That's awesome that you acted in a SW fan video! I can't access the pictures at the moment:-/ Grr. Oh, well, p'raps if I try something different later.

  7. Hehe, I liked this post. :-D It was very fun to look at and I agreed with almost everything you said. ;-) Some of the dresses you kind of like make me slightly grimace, but then some of them are really quite darling. I used to greatly dislike Padme, but I am growing more fond of her now. (I never liked girls, such as Maid Marian off the BBC Robin Hood, that make you think of feminists. :-P But I'm warming to them a little more now.) I think my favourites of hers, are her purple, classy dress (besides the choker and hairstyle - not a fan of them either), her dress-that's-a-bit-too-low-on-the-back, (which it is, but I think the rest of it is gorgeous!), her blue nightgown with pearls (I can help but sigh happily when I see it, and wish my pajamas looked a little more nicer, hehe) and her gorgeous hair in those scenes (seriously, WHO LOOKS LIKE THAT WHEN THEY GET OUT OF BED? AND WHO WEARS PEARLS TO BED?!) and the spring, golden one. :-D I like them muchly.
This was a very fun post to look at, and if you consider it geeky, then I must be a Star Wars geek too. ;-) (AND DECEMBER 18TH. CAN'T WAIT.) I think Obi is my favourite off the "newer" ones. Ewan McGregor is just too cool. ;-D

    1. Haha, I'm glad;D Heehee, I have this weird thing for strange costumes...sometimes. It depends. And I'm not really quite sure why I like all of them;) Hmm, really? I guess Padme and Marian never really came across as feminists to me--they just came across as confident females who were also willing to be feminine. But I can understand why people wouldn't like them, I guess;-P I'm glad you're liking them more now!:D

I KNOW. The purple and the ombre and the nightdown. (Haha! I know, right?! It's just unfair.) And the springy one too, of course;)

Thanks! Hehe, well, some people consider SW fans to be geeks, so I thought I should preface;) Obi is a close second favorite from the new ones! And I've got to admit, I kinda wish he and Padme could have ended up together after Anakin went off the deep end. Because Obi clearly did care about Padme, and I think they could have been happy together. He would have taken care of her and the babies...I don't even care that the Jedi aren't supposed to marry;-P

      Delete
    2. Oh, yes Obi and Padme! Aww..... :-P Padme needed someone protective like Obi, and as you said Obi did CLEARLY care for her.....hehe, now I won't be able to get that out of my head. ;-) And the shock he had when they said she was dying.....and how he cared for her even when he knew that Anakin and her were married, but didn't tell anyone. (Yeah, and Jedi not marrying is just a side detail, come on. ;-P)

    3. I just had to pop in and mention that I second that. Padme shouldn't have died and she should have married him and they raised Luke and Leia until the twins had to be separated and later Obi reveals to Luke that he was his step-father. Yup. I like this. ;)

    4. YES. We shall band together as the Padme/Obi shippers!

  8. These are cool! I really like the dark purple one, third from the top. It's SO ELEGANT. Beautiful.
