5 Male Characters Tag

What-ho, all!  The lovely Ivy has tagged me for her '5 Male Characters Tag' :)  (You can see my answers to her 5 Female Characters Tag here.)  Thank you so much, Ivy!

Before I start, though, I just wanted to apologize--a number of my wonderful bloggie buddies (you know who you are) tagged me a long while ago for a great end-of-summer tag.  However, I didn't really have that eventful of a summer, and I just sort of kept postponing the tag until, lo and behold, it was September.  So I'm very sorry about that; I SO appreciated being tagged, and it was a lovely tag, but I think I put it off a bit too long, and as I said, I wouldn't really know how to answer the questions.  I sowwy:(

Rules:
1.) List 5 of you favorite male characters (book or screen)

2.) Tagging other people is optional

3.) If you are tagged link back to the person that tagged you

4.) Link back to Revealed In Time (preferably using the link to this post)

~ ~ ~

Choose one from each category.
1.) Hero

2.) Villain

3.) Anti-hero

4.) Best book-to-screen adaption

5.) Best character perception

As Merida's dad would say, "Right, 'ere we go."

Hero
Faramir from The Lord of the Rings

I know I try to stick to characters I don't always talk about in these tags, but…to heck with that.  Faramir is the best.  Amen and amen.  *sigh*  I love this guy.  He's honorable, courageous, kindhearted, and gentle.  And no, his portrayal in the movie really doesn't bother me.  I mean, hello, it's what caused me to fall in love with him in the first place.  I think David Wenham did a wonderful job as Faramir.  It does irk me, yes, that they made him a man of "questionable integrity" at first, BUT they did resolve it, and we all know the truth of the matter, so…I don't really care too much:D

Villain
Carver Doone from Lorna Doone (2000)

This one was actually harder than I thought it would be.  The villains I tend to like are really more of antiheroes than straight-up villains, but I guess I've always been mildly intrigued by the character of Carver Doone.  There is no doubt that he's a sick little fiend, but there's something about him that makes you regret that he is that way.  It's like you want him to become a good character at times--not all the time, but every once in a while something triggers an "It's a shame you're a bad guy."  I'm not entirely sure what it is.  Can anyone else relate?

Antihero
Sir Guy of Gisborne from BBC Robin Hood

You go ahead and rock that guy-liner, Guy.

Well, duh;)  Antiheroes to me are characters that are walking an almost indistinguishably thin line between utter villainy and utter heroism.  They are chiaroscuros, torn between the ease of selfishness and the conviction of selflessness.  Guy is that, definitely.  There are times (mainly in the first season) when, I'll confess, he frankly just irritates me and you kind of want him to just GO AWAY ALREADY, but then the second season happens, and his hero potential starts to come out.  Then that--ahem--is, oh, how shall we put it, "postponed" at the S2 last episode (let's not even go there).  At the start of the third season, he's tortured with overwhelming guilt over what he's done (ya think??) and yet he holds to a wild, irrational hatred of Robin and feeling of injustice that he believes Robin has done him.  Eventually, however, Robin's slow and reluctant efforts to reach out to him, partially for Marian's sake (hey, I think it might have been) "bring him out," and by the heart-wrenching, glorious series finale, he has "redeemed himself."  Ish.

"He has qualities!"

I think we'll all dissolve into puddles of tears if we talk about Guy's relationships with the women in his life for too long (except Isabella and Annie.  We shan't discuss those unfortunate episodes).  While I am NOT and will NEVER BE a Guy/Marian shipper, I love the dynamics of their relationship.  "She saw good where there was none…she made me a better man." (SOBS)  I don't think Marian ever loved Guy like she loved Robin (obviously), but I do think she cared very much about him as a person.  Like he said, she influenced his life for the better.  And then MEG and don't even GET ME STARTED ON THE FEELS.

Best book-to-screen adaptation
Jason Isaacs as Capt. James Hook (Peter Pan 2003)

I'm a huuuuuuge fan of the book PP, and frankly I don't think any screen adaptation to date has fully captured the awesomeness, but the 2003 comes pretty durn close.  (My main problem with it is that the cast is too old, and thus they over-romanticize Peter and Wendy's relationship.)  And look at that picture up there.  That is my Hook.  Personified.  In the flesh.  Hook is possibly my favorite villain ever, and Jason Isaacs portrayed him well-nigh perfectly.  The wardrobe, the makeup, the attitude…it makes me happy:)

Best character perception
Oscar Isaac as Joseph (The Nativity Story)

This was a hard category for me to figure out, I'll admit.  I wasn't exactly sure what was intended by 'character perception,' so I thought it might mean how thoroughly an actor understands a character and embodies them?  Anyway, that's the option with which I'm going;)  So.  Oscar Isaac from The Nativity Story.  I lurve this movie, and I really love this portrayal of Joseph.  I think the actor understood the biblical Joseph.  Quiet, loyal, faithful, hurt when he thinks Mary has betrayed him, but unquestioningly obedient to the angel.  He acts far and above the call of duty toward Mary, taking her and covering her without concern for the social stigma they will suffer.  I mean, "they're going to miss us."  SQUEEE CAN I HUG YOU?!?!  He's just such a sweetheart.

Plus he and Mary are like the cutest darn things ever.

Now, as to tagging!  I'm going to just tag four people whom I know enjoy a good tag, so that they'll still be able to tag some people.

Abigail

Have fun, guys!:)

  1. Thanks for doing the tag! I love your choices, especially for your anti-hero : ) I'm glad you're a Marian/Robin shipper though!

  2. This was so much fun to read :) Actually, I--er--have never watched any of these movies all the way through. Nope. I hain't. But, you know, it's still LOTS of fun. Guy--mmmmmmm. Sounds intruiging.

Just a question: How was the portrayal of Mary's character in "The Nativity Story"--do you think they did a good job? I've heard mixed reports from various sources, if you know what I mean, and Mary is SUPER IMPORTANT to me since I was partly named after her . . . so I was curious to know how they did. :)

    1. Yay! I recommend them all!;) And yes. Guy. WATCH THE SERIES, PLEASE, I BEG OF YOU. Except that you WILL be heartbroken by the end. Just a warning.

Okay, the portrayal of Mary…*sigh* It was--adequate. I like the character evolution that goes on with her, but…she's just…frankly, she's a bit rude to Joseph for a good portion of the story (she does come around, though, and it's the SWEETEST THING!), and there is something that just feels a little "off" about her portrayal, but it's a GOOD portrayal. That probably didn't make any sense. It's complicated. I'd still definitely recommend it, though:)

    2. I'll try to watch Robin Hood sometime :) Sounds really neat. Although sad.

Okay, sounds like I better skip "The Nativity Story," then. It would just make me really mad to see Mary portrayed that way :) I'm Catholic, you see, and we believe that Mary is immaculate and free from all sin, so . . . yeah. She wouldn't BE rude, if you get what I'm saying.

Of course, this is just what I myself believe, and you don't have to agree with me at all . . . I'm just trying to explain why I wouldn't want to watch it :)

      Delete
    3. Aye, do;)

Oh, are you? That's so cool--some of my extended family are Catholic:) I totally understand! I'm not Catholic myself, but I'll admit I wasn't totally satisfied with the way Mary was portrayed either, so yeah, maybe that would be best. Shame, though, 'cause Joseph is awesome:D

      Delete
    4. Thank you! Yes, I'm Catholic, and my middle name is Mary :) I'm glad they got Joseph right, at least! Because he's super-important, too. Let's hope they make another movie someday in which Mary and Joseph are BOTH outstanding :)

(Also, I hope this doesn't come across as weird, but I really would like to say "thank you" for not getting mad than I'm not the same religion as you . . . because, you know, I have run into that reaction quite a bit, and it's always UPSETTING. So--thank you very much! :) )

      Delete
    5. Yes, I'd say they definitely got HIM right, at least…yes! They should just make another movie with the same actors, but fix the glitches, haha XD

(Of course! Oh, I'm really sorry--that's a shame and it's wrong of people to react like that. You are so welcome! Honestly, I truly do think Catholicism is a beautiful religion. I don't agree with every aspect of it, but then I haven't researched it fully yet, and it certainly intrigues me. So of course!)

      Delete
    6. Thank you so much--that makes me really happy, Olivia :) Yeah . . . it's tough. I think it's maybe because I live in the Deep South, where Catholics are really rare and so many people just don't KNOW very much about us. So they imagine we don't believe in Jesus or that we secretly worship idols--or worse. (I ain't kiddin' either. There are folks here who actually think that.)

      Delete
    7. I'm sure it is! I guess it's easy to become judgmental when we don't understand something, but that's no excuse. I know I fail sometimes in "judging" certain denominations, but we must simply try to do better and ask God to help us, and He will, right?:)

      Delete
    8. YES.
That's exactly right. :) And if both of us try our best to do that, it should make at least SOME difference in the world. (And I know exactly what you mean--I'm often guilty of "judging" other denominations myself. Like, it's perfectly okay to disagree with their ideas, but I need to respect their convictions just the same.)

  3. The Nativity Story!!! I have seen so many different Christmas movies, but the Nativity is one of my favorites. It made me realize that Mary and Joseph were real people (duh). ;) It's so much more real when you see characters as an adult then a child. ;)

  5. Love this! Faramir is great. :)))))))
And what you said about that Peter Pan is so right too! I watched it years ago but I remember thinking exactly that!
You like Lorna Doone???!?!?!?! I love that movie! And yes Carver Doone is just..... something. As you say.
I had to skim through what you said about Guy..... I don't want spoilers!

Yes! There are a couple quibbles, but overall it's great;)

Yes, I do! That is, I haven't seen it in quite a while, but when I do watch it, I really like it. T'is a great story:D

Eeeeeep! I can't wait to keep hearing more updates about RH!!!!

  6. Hey, I know all of these! :-D
Faramir is amazing. 'Nuff said. Carver is....quite villainy really. :-P But yes, I get what you mean - sometimes I do think to myself, 'maybe he's not totally evil....surely there's something good about him!' and then hope he may turn good but he kind of goes the opposite. ;-P Anyways, he's certainly a mixed up mess, that fellow....
Guy. AHHH. He's SUCH a puzzle! He's awful and nasty and then he does That Dreadful Deed and everyone hates him and he's positively creepy in the first few episodes of Season 3 and then he starts to soften a little and seems rather confused as to whose side he's on and then Meg happens and everything else falls into place. If only Meg hadn't died and.....*siiigh*
Captain James Hook. The man with a weakness for music but who has everything else against him. Issac Jacobs was very good as him, yes (and I personally REALLY liked Jeremy Sumpter's Peter Pan, although the whole *cough* relationship with Wendy got a bit out of hand) and I can't really pick a fault with him. Isn't it funny how so many movies/audio books make Captain Hook the same actor for Mr. Darling?! I thought that's so weird. :-P But anyways, there's always something about Hook, I must admit, that leaves you feeling a lot more nicer towards him than most villains. ;-)
Before I saw that movie, I never actually thought much about Joseph. But I thought he was very well portrayed, and can't really find anything to blame with him. (Mary was done well, too, although I suppose she could have been a LITTLE more improved.....though I'm not sure how. Still, I love the movie. We watch it every year for Christmas. :-D) He's SUCH a sweetheart, YES.
Ah, I liked this post muchly. :-)

Yup. Faramir...words fail, what!;) Yeah, Carver is puzzling. But he makes for a good villain:)

I knoooowww--"he loved flowers and sweet music." He was pretty perfect, and yeah, Jeremy Sumpter made a great Peter; I just wish he were a little younger, dontcha know.
And yes! It is definitely funny how that happens;)

Yes, bless 'im heart! I love it too--and yeah, we often watch it at Christmas, too:D

Yay! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

  7. Wait....JASON ISAACS PLAYED CAPTAIN HOOK???? How have I never known about this until nowwww??? I didn't even know there WAS a Peter Pan from 2003!!! OH my goodness. Jason Isaacs is, like, the ultimate Bad Guy. Have you seen The Patriot? (If not, I don't want to be pushy but GO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW.) ;-D

Okay, so I was never tagged....but I think I might just have to do this. Because I'm already thinking of characters in my mind for the answers, and when that happens, I know I've got to. :-)

    1. YES HE DID AND IT WAS AMAZING. You must watch it. Plus, the music is totally swoon-worthy. Hehe, I haven't watched that as of yet. I'm torn. On the one hand, the cast is so good, but on the other hand, I understand that it will rip my heart out?

Yes, please do! The reason I tagged so few people was that sometimes it's irritating when a person tags like every blogger they know, since that leaves practically no one for the people they tag, if you feel me?

  8. A lovely tag indeed!
I know, "real" villains are very hard to like. I can completely relate to your thoughts on Carver Doone. I watched the movie this summer, and though I really didn't like him I kinda wanted to (still don't know why).

And Guy!! The anti hero over them all. When I watched Robin Hood I almost watched it more for Guy's sake than for Robin's. Such a well written character - I waited 3 seasons (very impatiently) hoping he would turn good at some point.
I love the 2003 Peter Pan. I loved that it came so close to the book, and the Hook portrayal was very much like I remember him in the book.

    Some great choices!!

    1. They definitely are--Carver is puzzling to me in that you do "want" him to be good, but you can't put your finger on why. Weird.

Yes indeedy;) Heehee, when I started RH, it was for Richard Armitage, mainly, and because I'd heard so much about it in the blogosphere. I quickly fell in love with it for its own charms, but, ya know…yes;)

      Yes! It's really amazingly close.

  9. Yeah, I was at first very confused by the movie Faramir. When I read the book he was so different, but I quickly forgave Peter Jackson. :)

Oh my word, Gisborne. He is definitely an emotional rollercoaster. But in the end, I do love him to bits. He's a perfect choice.

Thank you so much for tagging me! :) As you know, I love it when I'm tagged. ;D

You're so welcome! I love being tagged, too:D

  10. Eek!!! Faramir!
Yes, I've reached the part in the Two Towers with him and he's great. He doesn't top Aragorn for me (yet...) but he's great nonetheless.

Carver! I have this great liking for creepy villains who like the heroine....but of course, with the heroine being saved by the hero. I can see what you mean. Carver is just what you said-a sick little fiend- and yet-and yet-you do kind of go "aww" for him sometimes. It's just like, "Carver, why must you be like this?"

GUY. I agree with everything you said about him. Yes-he's at his worst in the 1st season-killing people...and Annie. Ugh, we won't go there. But I just feel so. bad. for. him. As he says to Marian, he has NO ONE but the Sheriff. He has been trained and taught to do evil, he hasn't had a good influence in his life. And yes!!! Marian and Robin forever. But I know how Marian feels for Guy. She pities him and she can SEE where he could be good. She wants him to be good.
But yeah. I need to stop before I start crying. :"(

I watched the 2003 Peter Pan a loooong time ago-and I want to watch it again. :)

    1. YAY!!!!! Haha, well, it is usually him, Aragorn, and Legolas in competition for the best LotR guy in the fandom (at least from what I've experienced) ;D I do love Aragorn, but…Faramir will always be my special favorite, I think:)

I think I do, too! Sometimes I'm concerned about that tendency in myself…:P Exactly--you hate him but you wish you didn't have to.

GUY FOREVER. Uck. The Annie incident makes me SO ANGRY. But yes, you can't stay mad at him for long--he's at heart just hopelessly, utterly lonely, and he chases all the wrong things to fill that void. *sobs* Marian is wonderful. I'm really starting to realize exactly how much I love her.

      Yes, you should;D

  11. FARAMIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think you already know my opinion on this guy!!!!!! I am NEVER watching the theatrical edition of The Two Towers again!!!!!!! It made me so mad how messed up Faramir's characater was and I HATED Peter Jackson for doing it............and then I watched the extended edition and laughed, squealed, cried and wanted to hug Peter Jackson!!! Faramir is my Captain. (No I DON'T have a crush on him!!!!)

RICHARD ARMITAGE!!!!!! I SOOOOOOOOOOO want to watch this TV series!!! I really, really, really want Mom to finish watching it so that I can!!!! Mom says that some of Marian's outfits annoy her though because they SO aren't period correct!

:) And Guy...YES!!!! I love him so much, actually the reason I watched Robin Hood BBC is because of Richard Armitage.:) Great post!! :)

"I know I try to stick to characters I don't always talk about in these tags, but…to heck with that. Faramir is the best. Amen and amen." Haha! Yeah, might as well say it like it is! ;) Faramir's great!

I've never seen Lorna Doone, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, or the Nativity Story, so I can't say much on those characters, but I still very much enjoyed reading your descriptions of them. Carver Doone sounds like a very complicated person. And though I've never seen him, I totally understand where you're coming from. There are definitely certain villains that you wish would just turn good!

Oh my! Now you've got me curious...who's Meg? I might have to watch Robin Hood sometime, it sounds like it has a lot of good characters.

YES WATCH ROBIN HOOD. It DOES have awesome characters. Meg is...well, I can't really say without giving stuff away, but there is a very emotional relationship because of Reasons, and...I can't really explain it--unless you want to know the whole story of RH, and then I could;)
